Hoops Wins for Houghton, Hancock Girls – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In girls basketball last evening…
• Houghton edged Calumet 51-46. Gwen Markham and Meghan Trewhella each scored 16 for the Gremlins, and Annika Peterson sealed the win with a couple of clutch late free throws. Laina Kariniemi of the Copper Kings led all scorers with 26.
• Hancock shut down Ironwood 56-16. Bella Hebert scored 18 for the Bulldogs, who held the Red Devils to just four points in the second half.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City lost to Wakefield-Marenisco 57-38.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell fell to Ontonagon 38-32.
• Jeffers stopped Watersmeet 59-29. Sara Johnson paced the Jets with 17 points.

In boys basketball last night…
• Houghton used a quick start to race past West Iron County 79-45. The Gremlins led 26-6 at the end of the first quarter.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell edged Ontonagon 41-37.
• Jeffers outscored Watersmeet 83-52. Levi Frahm had 33 points and 11 rebounds for the Jets, and Ashton Kunishige added 16. Asher Garrison scored 16 for the Nimrods.

In high school hockey last night…
• Jeffers and Calumet skated to a 1-1 tie.

Both Houghton ski teams placed second at the Theron Peterson Memorial Ski Race at Powderhorn Mountain yesterday. On the girls side, Rachel Sun’s third place in the slalom and fourth place in the giant slalom were her best results of the year. On the boys side, Eli Heathman’s too first place in the slalom and second in the giant slalom. See full results here.

College Basketball

The Finlandia men’s basketball team lost 83-49 to Wisconsin-Superior yesterday. No Lion scored in double figures.

The Lions men’s team hosts Wisconsin Lutheran tonight at the Paavo Nurmi Center. The start time has been moved up to 6:00. Coverage will begin at 5:40 on the Voice of the Lions, 99.3 The Lift.

NHL

The Red Wings lost to the Coyotes 4-3 in a shootout last night. Dylan Larkin, Pius Suter and David Perron scored for Detroit. Magnus Hellberg stopped 20 shots, and took the loss in net.

The Wings visit the Golden Knights tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 9:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons meet the Bulls in Paris tomorrow afternoon. Coverage will begin at 2:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

Former Tigers utility player Harold Castro has signed a minor league contract with the Rockies.

There are reports that the Brewers have inked a deal with Brian Anderson, who can play third base and right field. Anderson is a career .256 hitter, but struggled with injuries the last two seasons with the Marlins.
