Houghton and Calumet Girls Fall in Regionals – Friday Sports Wrap

Both the Houghton and Calumet girls basketball teams ended their tournament runs with losses in the regional finals of the state tournament last night.

The Copper Kings’ first loss of the season was a 53-52 heartbreaker to St. Ignace. In the closing seconds, Calumet took a 52-50 lead when Hailey Wickstrom sank a putback shot off a rebound from a missed three-point attempt. St. Ignace tied it with a layup by Abby Ostman. The game was tied with 1.1 seconds remaining when Natalee Lee of the Saints was fouled by Calumet’s Clara Loukus. Lee missed her first free throw, but sank the second. St. Ignace then intercepted Calumet’s long inbound pass to end the game. Loukus led the Copper Kings with 22 points. Wickstrom added 11. Ostman led all scorers with 22 points. Calumet ends the season with a record of 23-1, and a WestPAC title. See video highlights from the game here.

Manistee used a strong fourth quarter to push past Houghton 42-30. The Gremlins close their season with a mark of 16-7.

In boys Class D district play at Lake Linden-Hubbell tonight, Chassell will face Lake Linden in the title game at 7:00.

The Hancock hockey team will play Cranbrook in the state tournament semifinals this morning. Our pregame coverage from Plymouth will begin around 10:30 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

The Michigan Tech hockey team opens the WCHA tournament tonight. The top-seeded Huskies will host Alaska Anchorage in the best-of-three series. Game two will be tomorrow night. Game three will be played Sunday, if needed. Face-offs are at 7:07 at the SDC.

Three Huskies have received high honors from the WCHA. Senior co-captain Alex Petan is the WCHA Player of the Year. Senior goaltender Jamie Phillips is the WCHA Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Year. Head coach Mel Pearson is the WCHA Coach of the Year.

Petan was named to the All-WCHA First Team. Phillips and defenseman Matt Roy earned spots on the Second Team. Malcolm Gould, Tyler Heinonen and Shane Hanna were placed on the Third Team. Jake Lucchini was named to the All-Freshman Team.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team is seeded fifth in the WCHA tourney, and will open play tonight at fourth-seeded Ferris State.

GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers wrap up their regular season with a home game at 7:30 against the Mosinee Papermakers tonight, and an away game at DePere tomorrow night.

The Calumet Wolverines conclude their regular season with games against the Eagle River Falcons tonight, and Mosinee tomorrow night. Both games begin at 7:30. Tonight’s is at the Colosseum. Tomorrow night’s game is at the Houghton County Arena.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings broke their three-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets last night. Winnipeg led by two at the end of the first period, but Detroit responded with two tallies in the second. Justin Abdelkader’s goal with four-and-a-half minute remaining in the third was the game-winner. Petr Mrazek made 23 saves to get the win.  The Wings will host the New York Rangers tomorrow afternoon. Face-off is at 2:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons play at Charlotte tonight. Tip-off is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

MLB
In spring training baseball, the Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies played to a 6-6 tie yesterday. Detroit starter Jordan Zimmermann gave up four runs while pitching into the fourth inning. James McCann homered. The Tigers face the Astros this afternoon.

The Milwaukee Brewers lost 3-1 to the San Francisco Giants yesterday. Milwaukee starter Jimmy Nelson walked three while giving up a run over two innings. The Brewers will take on the Rangers this afternoon.

NFL
The Detroit Lions continue to sign free agents. Yesterday, they announced deals with former Cleveland cornerback and special teams standout Johnson Bademosi, and former Buffalo defensive tackle Stefan Charles.
