Houghton, Baraga Girls Claim Regional Hoops Crowns – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

Both the Houghton and Baraga girls basketball teams claimed regional championships last night.
• In Division Two, Houghton shut down Big Rapids 41-27. The Gremlins will face Frankenmuth in the tournament quarterfinals Tuesday at 7:00 at Big Rapids High School. The Eagles eliminated Freeland 54-27 last night. Coverage of the quarterfinal game will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
• In Division Four, Baraga stopped Norway 53-37. The Vikings will play Mackinaw City in the quarterfinals Tuesday at 7:00 at Munising. The Comets dispatched Inland Lakes 62-53 to advance.

In boys basketball playoff district finals tonight…
• In Division Four, District 98, Jeffers will host Lake Linden-Hubbell at 6:00.
• In Division Four, District 97 at Ironwood, Ironwood will play Wakefield-Marenisco at 7:00 CST.

The Houghton hockey team will face East Grand Rapids in the state semifinals this morning. Coverage will begin at 10:40 on the season-long home of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf. Riverview Gabriel Richard and Flint Powers Catholic will meet in the other semifinal this afternoon.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team opens the NCAA Division Two playoffs tonight. The fourth-seeded Huskies will take on fifth-seed Trevecca Nazarene at 7:30. The Midwest Regional is being held at Ashland University in Ohio.

The Northern Michigan men’s team begins the playoffs tomorrow at 7:30. The fifth-seeded Wildcats will face fourth-seed Hillsdale. The Midwest Regional is being hosted by the University of Indianapolis.

College Hockey

Michigan Tech will host Northern Michigan in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association semifinal game tomorrow night. Face-off is at 6:07 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. Minnesota State will host Ferris State in the other semifinal. The championship game will be played next Saturday.

Blake Pietila of the Huskies has been named a top-three finalist for the Mike Richter Award, which is given each year to the top NCAA Division One goaltender. Pietila leads the nation with 10 shutouts, is second with 23 wins, third in save percentage, and fourth in goals-against average.

GLHL

The Calumet Wolverines visit the De Pere Deacons tonight, and the Fox Cities Ice Dogs tomorrow night.

The Portage Lake Pioneers have the weekend off.

NHL

The Red Wings host the Bruins tomorrow afternoon. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons’ losing streak reached 10 games, as they fell to the Hornets 113-103 last evening. Cory Joseph led Detroit with 17 points.

The Pistons entertain the Pacers tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Tigers outscored the Pirates 10-7 in Grapefruit League play yesterday. Starter Michael Lorenzen pitched into the third inning, and gave up one run. Nick Maton hit his third home run of the spring.

The Tigers face the Yankees this afternoon. Spencer Turnbull will start for Detroit. Coverage will begin at 1:00 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers lost to the Giants 5-2 in Cactus League play. Christian Yelich homered. Starter Freddy Peralta pitched into the third inning, and gave up two runs.

Milwaukee faces the Guardians today. Brandon Woodruff will start for the Brewers.

Nordic Skiing

The annual UP Health System Great Bear Chase takes place tomorrow at the Swedetown Trails. The schedule includes 50k, 25k and 10k classic and freestyle events, along with a 50k skiathlon. See details here.
