Houghton Boys Cruise Past Calumet – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In boys high school basketball last night…
• Houghton took control early, and breezed past Calumet 55-33. Bruce Pugh led the Gremlins with 16 points, and Mikko Salmi added 15. Dryden Nelson scored 14 for the Copper Kings.
• Ewen-Trout Creek dumped Forest Park 68-39.
 • Lake Linden-Hubbell got past Watersmeet 57-51. Gabe Popko led all scorers with 21 points.
• Jeffers outscored Wakefield-Marenisco 80-68.
• L’Anse edged Ontonagon 58-55.
• Baraga lost to Ironwood 50-20.

In girls action last evening…
• Calumet thumped West Iron County 66-21. Marybeth Halonen scored 17 for the Copper Kings, and Laina Kariniemi added 12.
• Hancock stopped Ewen-Trout Creek 35-22.
• Baraga dispatched Ironwood 55-31.
 • Lake Linden-Hubbell got past Watersmeet 31-24.
• Jeffers smothered Wakefield-Marenisco 71-22. Taylor Heinonen scored 15 for the Jets, and Kyla Larson had 14. Kayla Londo led the Cardinals with nine points.
• L’Anse fell to Ontonagon 54-44.

On the girls schedule tonight…
• Calumet travels to Escanaba.

In girls-boys doubleheaders…
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City hosts Bessemer. The girls contest will start at 6:00, with the boys to follow.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell entertains Ironwood – the girls at 5:45, with the boys to follow.

In high school swimming yesterday…
• Houghton at Marquette – no report.

The Houghton swim team hosts Sault Ste. Marie tomorrow.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team lost a 91-81 shootout to Northwood last evening. Alex Rondorf scored 27 points in the losing effort, and Sara Dax added 23.

The Tech men’s team earned an easy 89-48 victory over the Timberwolves. Owen White scored 23.

Both Northern teams will host Northwood tomorrow.

Both Finlandia basketball teams will entertain Bay College tomorrow – the women at 1:00, and the men at 3:00. Pregame coverage of both contests will begin at 12:40 on the Voice of the Lions, 99.3 The Lift.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team hosts Bemidji State tonight at 7:07 and tomorrow at 6:07.

The NMU hockey team welcomes Lake Superior State tonight and tomorrow.

Both Finlandia University hockey teams are home this weekend. The men entertain the Milwaukee School of Engineering tonight at 7:30 and tomorrow at 4:00. Coverage of tomorrow’s men’s game will begin at 3:40 on KBear 102.3. The women host Lawrence University today at 4:00 and tomorrow at 7:45.

College Skiing

The Michigan Tech Nordic ski teams will host their own invitational this weekend at the Tech Trails. Freestyle races will be held tomorrow, with classic competition on Sunday.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers visit the Fox Cities Ice Dogs tonight, and the De Pere Deacons tomorrow.

The Calumet Wolverines call on the Eagle River Falcons tonight.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings visit the Pittsburgh Penguins tonight. Coverage begins at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons visit the Orlando Magic this evening.

NFL

The NFL conference championship games will be played Sunday. The Cincinnati Bengals will visit the Kansas City Chiefs for the AFC crown at 3:00. The Los Angeles Rams will host the San Francisco 49ers for the NFC title at 6:30. Hear both games on 99.3 The Lift.

USFL

Veteran coach Jeff Fisher has been named the new head coach of the Michigan Panthers USFL team. Fisher spent 22 seasons as a head coach in the NFL. He’ll head up the Detroit franchise in the reconstituted United States Football League when it returns this spring. The original USFL struggled through three seasons in the mid-80s. The Panthers won the title the first season. The new version of the league is being put together by Fox Sports.

MLB

Lloyd McClendon is back with the Detroit Tigers organization. He will replace Gary Jones as manager of the Toledo Mud Hens. Jones has been named the Tigers’ first base coach. McClendon managed the Mud Hens in 2016, and served on Detroit’s major league coaching staff for many years. He also managed the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Seattle Mariners.

Fishing

The Michigan Tech Fishing Club Ice Fishing Tournament will be held tomorrow on Pike Bay. Registration will begin at 6:30 at Centennial Park, and fishing will be open from 7:00 until 3:00. There is an optional virtual check-in. See their Facebook page for details.
