Houghton Boys Overpower Hancock – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In boys high school basketball last night…
• Houghton stopped Hancock 64-38. The Gremlins controlled the game from the start, and led by 22 points at halftime. Tucker Ryynanen scored 15 for Houghton, and Kyle Primeau added 14. J.D. Sebbas of the Bulldogs led all scorers with 20 points.
• Jeffers outscored Ontonagon 93-53. Levi Frahm led the Jets with 36 points, and Johnny Schutz added 25. Bryce Buzzo scored 19 for the Gladiators.
• Bessemer smothered Baraga 69-16.
• The Dollar Bay-Tamarack City – Watersmeet contest was postponed because Watersmeet has gone to remote learning for the week.

In girls action last night…
• Houghton overpowered Lake Linden-Hubbell 76-42. The Lakes hung tough early, and led by two after the first quarter, before the Gremlins took command. Four Houghton players reached double figures, led by Paige Sleeman with 18 points. Annika Peterson had 15, Meghan Trewhella 14, and Gwen Markham 11. Emily Jokela scored 21 for the Lakes.
• Baraga downed Bessemer 50-33.
• L’Anse edged Ironwood 46-42.
• Chassell defeated Wakefield-Marenisco 40-29. Lily Etelamaki scored 10 for the Panthers
• The Jeffers – Ontonagon game was postponed.
• The Dollar Bay-Tamarack City – Watersmeet contest was postponed because Watersmeet has gone to remote learning for the week.

On the boys hoops schedule tonight…
• Houghton hosts Gwinn.

On the girls schedule…
• Calumet plays at Westwood, in a game that was postponed from last Thursday.

In high school hockey last night…
• Houghton smothered Negaunee 8-0 in a game that ended early because of the mercy rule. Eight different Gremlins scored. Camden Markham had a three-point night with a goal and two assists. Troy Povich earned the shutout in net, as the Gremlins outshot the Miners 53-13.
• Hancock blanked Kingsford 6-0.

The Houghton Alpine ski team split a dual meet at Marquette yesterday…
• The girls team earned a 39-53 victory. Ashley Lehman finished first in the giant slalom and second in the slalom. Chloe Morley was fifth in the giant slalom. Keegan Leonard and Rachel Sun placed fourth and fifth in the slalom.
• The boys team finished behind the Redmen. Eli Heathman placed second in both the giant slalom and the slalom. Logan Niemi finished fourth in both events, and Hunter Battisfore was fifth in the giant slalom.

The Houghton swim team v Ishpeming yesterday – no report.

College Basketball

The Finlandia basketball games against Wisconsin-Superior last evening were postponed. 

The Finlandia women’s basketball game against Mount Mary that had been delayed from last weekend to this coming Sunday has been canceled.

College Hockey

The Finlandia University men’s hockey team lost 5-0 at Trine University last night. The Thunder outshot the Lions 58-10.

The Finlandia women’s hockey series at Trine this weekend has been postponed because of COVID-19 issues. No new date has been announced.

College Volleyball

The Finlandia volleyball team has introduced a new recruit. Avani Gill was a two-time high school team MVP from Delta, British Columbia.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings fell to the San Jose Sharks 3-2 in overtime last night. Tyler Bertuzzi and Nick Leddy scored for Detroit. Alex Nedeljkovic made 37 saves to keep the Wings in the game.

Detroit returns home to host the Winnipeg Jets tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

Nicklas Lidstrom is back with the Red Wings. The Hall-of-Famer will serve as vice president of hockey operations. He will be based in his native Sweden, and will focus on evaluations of current and potential players.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons suffered an ugly 133-87 loss to the Chicago Bulls last night. Josh Jackson led Detroit with 16 points.

The Pistons will host the Toronto Raptors Friday.
