Houghton Boys Win Esky XC Invitational – Friday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school volleyball last night…
– Calumet shut out Chassell 3-0.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell stopped Bessemer 3-0.
– Dollar Bay v Wakefield-Marenisco – not reported.
– L’Anse lost to West Iron County 3-0.
– Ontonagon blanked Watersmeet 3-0.

Tomorrow…
– Calumet plays at the Ashwaubenon Invitational.
– Hancock and Houghton travel to the Gladstone Invitational.
– Baraga, Dollar Bay, Chassell and Ontonagon compete at the Baraga Invitational.

Houghton-Gremlins-LogoIn cross country yesterday, the Houghton boys took first place in the large school competition at the Escanaba Invitational. Calumet’s Mitch DeLong finished first individually, followed closely by Nick Wilson and Clayton Sayen of the Gremlins. Chassell finished second to Stephenson in the boys’ small school competition. Hunter Rautiola of the Panthers was the individual winner.

The Houghton girls placed second in the large school competition, and Calumet came in third. Chassell finished third in the small school girls’ competition. Leah Rautiola placed third individually.

Hancock runs at the Superior Central Invitational tomorrow.

In high school football tonight…

– Calumet travels to Hurley – it’s the first meeting between those teams since 1997.
– Hancock plays at Northland Pines.
– L’Anse entertains Westwood.
– Baraga welcomes Ewen-Trout Creek.
– Ontonagon hosts North Central.

Tomorrow, Lake Linden-Hubbell faces Iowa-Grant high school from Livingston, Wisconsin. The game will be played at Tomahawk, Wisconsin.

MTU Athletics Logo AThe Michigan Tech volleyball team plays at the Wisconsin-Parkside Tournament this weekend. The Huskies will face Minnesota State-Moorhead this afternoon… Upper Iowa tonight… St. Cloud State tomorrow afternoon… and Minnesota-Duluth tomorrow evening.

The MTU soccer team plays at Minnesota-Duluth tonight, and Bemidji State Sunday afternoon.

The Tech women’s tennis team plays at Ferris State this afternoon, and Grand Valley State tomorrow morning.

The Tech football team hosts Ferris State tomorrow. Kickoff is at 1:00 at Sherman Field.

The Northern Michigan University football team entertains Angelo State tomorrow afternoon.

Finlandia
Finlandia Lions New LogoThe Finlandia University volleyball team plays at the Northland College Tournament in Ashland this weekend. The Lions will face Wisconsin-Superior this morning… Wisconsin-Stout this afternoon… Wisconsin-River Falls tomorrow afternoon… and the host team tomorrow night.

The Finlandia men’s soccer team travels to Columbus, Ohio, to face Capital University this evening. The Lions will play at Otterbein University on Sunday.

The Finlandia women’s soccer team has the weekend off.

The Finlandia football team plays at Lawrence University tomorrow.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers had yesterday off, and host the Baltimore Orioles tonight. Michael Fulmer will start against Kevin Gausman. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Cleveland won yesterday, and now leads Detroit by six games in the American League Central Division. Baltimore also had the day off, so the Tigers still trail the Orioles by a game in the race for the last American League wild card playoff berth.

The Milwaukee Brewers pounded the St. Louis Cardinals 12-5 last night. The Crew broke the game open with a six-run sixth inning, powered by a Martin Maldonado home run, and Hernan Perez’ second RBI double of the night. Domingo Santana and Orlando Arcia homered earlier in the game. Junior Guerra gave up three runs over five innings, and got the win.

The Brewers continue that set against the Cardinals in St. Louis tonight. Jimmy Nelson will pitch against Carlos Martinez.

NFL
The Denver Broncos scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, and came from behind to defeat the Carolina Panthers 21-20 last night. Carolina’s Graham Gano missed a 50-yard field goal attempt in the closing seconds.

The Detroit Lions open their season Sunday afternoon at Indianapolis. Kickoff is at 4:25. We’ll join the game after Tigers baseball on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Packers start their season at Jacksonville on Sunday – that’s a 1:00 game.
