Houghton, Calumet Advance in Hockey Tourney – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

Houghton and Calumet will play for the regional high school hockey tournament title, after earning easy victories in the semifinals last night.

In the opening game, the Gremlins blanked Jeffers 9-0 in a game that ended after two periods because of the mercy rule. P.J. Donnelly, Kevin Bostwick and Brad Gauthier each scored twice. Justin Norkol, Brendan Erickson and Carson Stevens also found the net.

Calumet advanced with a 9-3 win over Hancock. The Copper Kings broke open a close game when they tallied three of a flurry of four goals scored in less than a minute late in the second period. Brent Loukus, Dean Loukus and Tanner Rowe each scored twice for Calumet, with Scott Loukus, Gabe Coppo and Alex Mattila adding one each. Petr Anderson had two scores for the Bulldogs, and Trevor Tchida scored once.

In boys high school tournament basketball last night…

In Division Four district play at Chassell, the home Panthers eliminated Lake Linden-Hubbell 69-47. Abe Gockenbach led Chassell with 26 points. William Lyons had 11 for the Lakes.

Chassell will face Dollar Bay-Tamarack City in one District semifinal. Baraga will take on Hancock in the other.

In the Division Four district at Ewen-Trout Creek, Jeffers defeated Watersmeet 63-46. The Jets will play Bessemer in the semifinals tonight at 6:00. Ewen-Trout Creek eliminated Ontonagon 50-43. The Panthers will face Wakefield-Marenisco in the other semifinal tonight at 8:00.

In the Division Three district, Calumet will play at L’Anse in one semifinal tonight at 7:00. Our broadcast coverage will begin around 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. Iron Mountain will face West Iron County in the other semifinal.

In regular-season girls high school basketball last night…

  • Houghton lost to Ishpeming 53-51.
  • Hancock lost to West Iron County 50-32. D’Andra Kero and Kirsten Dennis each scored nine for the Bulldogs.
  • Lake Linden-Hubbell defeated Republic-Michigamme 62-47. Mackenzie LePage had 13 points for the Lakes.
  • Jeffers overpowered Watersmeet 59-18.
  • L’Anse outscored Chassell 50-35. Maija Rice led the Purple Hornets with 17 points. Paige Sleeman scored 15 for the Panthers.

Finlandia

Finlandia University’s Katie Lundeen has been named Rookie Women’s Basketball Player of the Year by the American Collegiate Athletic Association. Lundeen was also named to the All-Conference First Team.

The Finlandia men’s soccer team has added a new recruit. Marcus Dominguez is from Hudsonville, Michigan.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings lost 8-1 to the Montreal Canadiens last night. Anthony Mantha scored Detroit’s only goal. Jimmy Howard gave up six scores over the first two periods, and Jonathan Bernier relieved him in the third. The Wings visit the Arizona Coyotes Saturday night. NBA

The Detroit Pistons visit the San Antonio Spurs tonight. Pregame coverage begins at 8:05 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers pounded out a 14-4 Grapefruit League victory over a split New York Mets yesterday. Pete Kozma and Harold Castro homered for Detroit. Matthew Boyd pitched a scoreless first inning, but left after giving up a couple of runs in the second. The Tigers will face the New York Yankees this afternoon. The Milwaukee Brewers lost 3-1 to the San Diego Padres yesterday. Starter Zach Davies pitched two scoreless innings. The Brewers will play the Cleveland Indians today.
