Houghton Claims Copper Spike – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball last night…
• Houghton blanked Hancock 3-0 in the Copper Spike match.
• Jeffers defeated Lake Linden Hubbell 3-2. Savannah Asiala and Makenna Harris led the Jets with five aces each. Makenna Harris had nine kills.
• The L’Anse match against West Iron County was canceled.
• Ewen-Trout Creek v Wakefield-Marenisco – no report.

In volleyball tonight, Chassell plays at Baraga.

Tomorrow, Calumet, Houghton and Gwinn will play for the WestPAC championship at Calumet. Negaunee also qualified for the finals, but had to bow out because of a COVID-19 pause. Houghton and Gwinn will play in game one. Calumet and Gwinn will play in game two. Houghton and Calumet will meet in game three. Our coverage will begin at 9:40 on KBear 102.3.

On the final night of the regular high school football season…
• The Copper Bowl game between Hancock and Houghton has been canceled because one of the Gremlins tested positive for COVID-19. Hancock was unable to find another opponent.
• Calumet entertains Marquette. Coverage starts at 6:40 on KBear 102.3.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell travels to Munising, Coverage kicks off at 6:40 on 97.7 The Wolf.
• L’Anse hosts Bark River-Harris.
• Ontonogan welcomes Forest Park. You can access streamed coverage from our sister station WIKB at KBear102.com.

The U.P. Cross Country finals will be run tomorrow…
• Division One schools will compete at Presque Isle Park in Marquette.
• Division Two schools will run at the George Young Recreation Complex at Iron River.
• Division Three schools will compete at the Pictured Rocks Golf Course in Munising.

Two Copper Country natives have been honored by the Michigan High School Athletic Association for their contributions to prep sports. They represent half of this year’s recipients of the Allen W. Bush Award.

Mark Mattson graduated from L’Anse High School. He’s gone on to serve as a teacher, coach and athletic director at Rhinelander, Marquette, Traverse City Central and is currently in his second stint as AD at Glen Lake.

Christian Wilson is a Chassell High School graduate, who has been a teacher, coach and athletic director in Mount Gilead, Ohio; Auburndale, Wisconsin; Novi, and is presently at Gaylord. He also played basketball at Michigan Tech, and served as an assistant coach for the Huskies. 

The other two honorees are Tom Johnston from East Grand Rapids, and Mike Roy, from Vicksburg.

The World Series continues tonight. The Dodgers and the Rays are tied at one win per team.

NFL

The Eagles scored two late touchdowns to edge the Giants 22-21 in last night’s NFL game.

On Sunday, the Lions visit the Falcons for a 1:00 contest. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.

The Packers visit the Texans for a 1:00 game.

The Buccaneers play the Raiders in the Sunday night contest on 99.3 The Lift.
