Houghton Claims WestPAC Baseball Tourney Title – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

The WestPAC baseball and softball tournaments were both staged Saturday in the Copper Country.

In the baseball tourney, Houghton downed Hancock 6-4 in the championship game. Gaborik Carlson got the win on the mound, striking out seven over the five-inning game, and collecting three hits. Cameron Cischke added two hits, including the game-winner that drove in two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Henry Switzer allowed just one hit and struck out six. Bryce Pugh tallied three hits and five RBI. Hudson Markham added two hits and three RBI. Other results were not reported.

In the softball tourney, Negaunee defeated Calumet 10-0 in the championship game. The Copper Kings had reached the final by edging Hancock 3-2. Houghton fell to Ishpeming 1-0 in their tournament opener. Estella Soumis took the tough loss, giving up just five hits. The Gremlins managed only three hits. Other results were not reported.

In other baseball action Saturday…
• Lake Linden-Hubbell dropped two at Gogebic, 13-6 and 7-4.

In other softball play…
• Lake Linden-Hubbell swept Ironwood, 19-3 and 18-8. In game one, Olivia Shank struck out 13. Kara Kinnunen and Clara Colombe each had two singles and a double. Kinnunen earned the win in game two, and Cleo Milkey had a single and a double.
• Gogebic at Jeffers – no report.

At the U.P. girls soccer tourney in Marquette Saturday, Houghton defeated Iron Mountain 2-0 in the quarterfinals, then fell to eventual tournament champion Marquette 3-1 in the semifinals.

NBA

The Nuggets outscored the Lakers 119-108 Saturday night, to take a 3-0 lead in the Western Conference finals. The Celtics visit the Heat as the Eastern Conference finals continue tonight. Miami leads that set 2-0.

NHL

The Panthers shaded the Hurricanes 2-1 in overtime Saturday evening, and staked a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference finals. The Western Conference series resumes this afternoon, as the Stars visit the Golden Knights. Vegas holds a 1-0 lead in that set.

MLB

The Tigers lost to the Nationals 5-2 Saturday. Spencer Torkelson’s two-run homer in the first inning gave Detroit an early advantage, but the Tigers’ bats were quiet for the remainder of the game. Alex Faedo took the loss, allowing three runs over five innings.

The Tigers visit the Nationals again this afternoon. Joey Wentz will start against Josiah Gray. Coverage will begin at 1:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers fell to the Rays 8-4 Saturday. Eric Lauer struggled, giving up six runs over three innings. Owen Miller and Brian Anderson homered for Milwaukee.

Those teams play again this afternoon. Freddy Peralta will pitch against Jalen Beeks.
