Houghton, E-TC Win Boys Hoops Upsets – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In boys regular-season high school basketball last evening…
• Houghton stunned Jeffers 60-56. The Gremlins broke out to an early lead. The Jets came back to tie the contest in the fourth quarter, but Houghton held on for the win. Miiko Salmi led the Gremlins with 18 points, including a series of critical free throws in the closing minute. Kyle Primeau added 17. Johnny Schutz had 18 and Levi Frahm chipped in 14 for the Jets, who suffered just their third loss of the season.
• Calumet fell to Negaunee 53-31.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell downed Watersmeet 54-45.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City edged Ironwood 65-60 in double overtime.
• L’Anse defeated Republic-Michigamme 56-48.
• Ontonagon got past Baraga 50-44.
• Ewen-Trout Creek upended Menominee 59-58 in overtime. All eight of the Panthers points in the extra period came on free throws.

In girls basketball tournament district semifinals tonight…
• In Division Four District 98…
  – Chassell will play at Baraga at 6:00.
  – Lake Linden-Hubbell will play at L’Anse at 6:00.

 • In Division Four District 97 at Ontonagon…
  – Ironwood will face Ontonagon at 6:00.
  – Watersmeet will meet Ewen-Trout Creek at 7:30.

 • Division Three District 65…
  – Hancock will play at Ishpeming at 7:00.
  – Calumet will entertain Westwood at 6:00. Coverage will begin around 5:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.

 • Division Two District 33…
  – Houghton will host Kingsford at 6:00. Coverage will begin at 5:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
  – Escanaba will play at Negaunee.

Baraga dominated the Copper Mountain Conference Girls All-Conference honors released yesterday. Reide Osterman was named Most Valuable Player. Tyler Larson was named Coach of the Year, and the Vikings were named Team of the Year. Ontonagon’s Makennah Uotila was named Defensive Player of the Year.

Joining Osterman and Uotila on the Dream Team are Kate Borseth from Ewen-Trout Creek, Emily Jokela from Lake Linden-Hubbell, Corina Jahfetson from Baraga and Ashley Datto from Dollar Bay-Tamarack City. Taylor Sanregret from L’Anse joined Osterman, Jokela, Jahfetson and Datto on the Copper Country Division First Team. The Copper Country Division Second Team roster includes Maggie Gaunt of Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Makennah Hendrickson and Kylie Michaelson of Baraga, Sara Johnson from Jeffers, Trisha Pietila from Chassell, and Sophia Rice from L’Anse. College Football

The Michigan Tech football team has hired Jack Rustman as offensive line coach. Rustman joins the Huskies from Concordia University in Chicago. He played college football at Northern Michigan University.

College Basketball

The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament begins tonight.
• Both Tech teams open at home – the fourth-seeded women at 5:30 against Northwood, and the second-seeded men against Wisconsin-Parkside at 7:30.
• The eighth-seeded Northern Michigan women play at top seed Grand Valley, and the third-seeded Northern men will host Lake Superior State.

College Softball

Yesterday in Florida, the Finlandia softball team lost to Cabrini University 11-3, and Rosemont University 8-4. The Lions have today off.

College Baseball

The Finlandia baseball team resumes its southern schedule tomorrow with a doubleheader against St. Vincent College.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings skated past the Carolina Hurricanes 4-3 in overtime last night. Dylan Larkin’s goal late in the third period extended the game, and Lucas Raymond found the net with eight seconds remaining in overtime to get the win. Alex Nedeljkovic made 27 saves.

The Wings visit the Tampa Bay Lightning Friday. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons dropped a 116-113 decision to the Washington Wizards last night. Jerami Grant scored 26 for Detroit. Killian Hayes missed a late three-pointer that would have forced overtime.

The Pistons visit the Toronto Raptors tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 7:05 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The start of this year’s Major League Baseball season will be delayed, after the billionaire team owners and the millionaires who play for them failed to agree on a new contract yesterday. After talks collapsed, Commissioner Rob Manfred said the first two series of the season will be canceled, and not made up. Unless something dramatic happens, the earliest the season will start will be April 8th.
