In high school football last night, Houghton overcame a 14-12 third quarter deficit, and roared back to defeat Westwood 32-14. See video highlights here.

The Michigan Tech volleyball team split their two games at the Flyer Festival in Romeoville, Illinois on Friday, losing their morning match 3-1 (11-25, 27-25, 22-25, 15-25) to Southwest Minnesota State, and winning their afternoon contest against Central Washington 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-14).  The Huskies will take on Augustana this morning..

MTU Athletics Logo BThe MTU football team opens its season at home today against Walsh. Kickoff is at 1:00 at Sherman Field.

The MTU soccer team began its season with a 2-0 loss to Winona State Friday night. The game was scoreless until the 68th minute. The Warriors scored an insurance goal in the 88th minute. The Huskies will host St. Cloud State tomorrow at noon.

The Northern Michigan University football team kicks off its season this afternoon at Lake Erie.

Finlandia
The Finlandia women’s soccer team plays at Northland College this afternoon.

The Finlandia men’s soccer team suffered a 3-2 overtime loss to Rockford University Friday, in a game that was played in Ashland. The Lions led 2-1, until the Regents tied the score with 33 seconds remaining in regulation. Rockford scored the game-winner with 44 seconds left in the extra period. The Lions will play Northland University this afternoon.

Finlandia Lions New LogoThe Finlandia football team begins its second season against Concordia-Wisconsin this afternoon. Kickoff is at 1:00 at McAfee Field. The new locker rooms at McAfee Field will be dedicated before the game. Money is still being raised to pay for those locker rooms. To contribute, click here.

At the Sugar Loaf Classic in Winona, Minnesota, the Finlandia volleyball team lost 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-11) to Saint Mary’s, and 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-16) to St. Catherine on Friday. The Lions will face St. Norbert’s and Wisconsin-Stevens Point today.

The new Shawn Wickersheim Memorial Student Lounge on the lower level of the Paavo Nurmi Center will be dedicated this morning at 10:00. The public is invited. The university set a 10-thousand dollar goal to cover the costs of the lounge. More than 70 percent of that has been raised, but additional donations are needed. To contribute online, click here.

The Detroit Tigers scored twice off All-Star closer Wade Davis in the ninth inning, and defeated the Kansas City Royals 7-6 Friday night. KC had scored twice in the bottom of the eighth to take the lead, but Davis hit Ian Kinsler with a pitch to open the top of the ninth. A double by Jose Iglesias moved Kinsler to third, and both of them scored on a single by Miguel Cabrera. Cabrera had homered in the seventh inning. Justin Upton also homered for Detroit.

The Tigers continue that series at Kansas City tonight. Michael Fulmer will start against Yordano Ventura. Hear the first pitch at 7:15 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Cleveland also won Friday, so Detroit remains four and a half games behind the Indians in the American League Central Division.

Scooter Gennett drove in the game’s only run with a double in the sixth inning, as the Milwaukee Brewers edged the Pittsburgh Pirates 1-0 Friday night. Junior Guerra’s return from the disabled list was a short one – he was lifted in the fourth inning after throwing 70 pitches. Six relievers combined to complete the shutout.

The Milwaukee Brewers continue that series at Pittsburgh this evening. Jimmy Nelson will pitch against Ivan Nova.
