Calumet, Hancock to Hockey Regional Final; DB-TC Boys Wrap Unbeaten Season – Friday Sports Wrap

High School
Both of last night’s regional hockey semifinals ended early because of the mercy rule. Calumet routed Jeffers 9-1. Scott Loukus had a hat trick, and Sam Erkkila added two goals. Hancock blanked L’Anse 9-0. Alex Nordstrom had a hat trick. Teddy Randell and Trevor Tchida each scored twice. Philip Rios got the shutout in net, filling in for Dawson Kero, who was out with the flu. L’Anse had only nine players available for the game. The Copper Kings and Bulldogs will play for the regional title tomorrow afternoon at 2:00. Ontonagon and Chassell will decide the girls class D district basketball title tonight at 7:00 at Jeffers High School.

In boys regular season hoops last night…
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City overcame a 13-point halftime deficit, and closed out an undefeated regular season with a 70-59 victory over Jeffers. Devin Schmitz led the Blue Bolts with 28 points, and Jaden Janke added 22. Jeffers’ Carson Turner led all scorers with 31 points.
– Houghton lost to Marquette 50-24.
– Calumet defeated Hancock 67-42. The Copper Kings share the WestPAC title with West Iron County.
– Baraga lost to Ontonagon 78-49.
– L’Anse fell to Westwood 54-42.
– Ewen-Trout Creek’s game against Bessemer was canceled because of a flu outbreak.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University softball team opens its spring schedule of games in Clermont, Florida tomorrow. The Lions will play the Milwaukee School of Engineering, and Nebraska Wesleyan.

The Finlandia women’s soccer team has added a new recruit. Isabella Robins has been a member of the Nevada Olympic Development Program for the last three years. She’s from Las Vegas.

MTU/NMU
The Western Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs begin this evening. The opening round is a best two-out-of three, with game two tomorrow, and game three on Sunday, if needed. Michigan Tech is seeded fifth, and plays on the road at Bemidji State. Northern Michigan University is seeded second, and hosts Alabama-Huntsville.

The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team faces Lake Superior State in the semifinals of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament at Big Rapids tomorrow at 5:00.

GLHL
The Calumet Wolverines entertain the Mosinee Papermakers tonight, and the West Bend Bombers tomorrow night. Because of the CopperDog 150, tonight’s game will begin at 8:30 at the Colosseum. Tomorrow’s contest will start at 7:30.

The Portage Lake Pioneers host Mosinee tomorrow night. Faceoff is at 7:00 at Dee Stadium.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings visit the Winnipeg Jets tonight. Pregame coverage begins at 7:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons face the Magic in Orlando tonight.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers lost to the Atlanta Braves 5-2 in Grapefruit League play yesterday afternoon. Nicholas Castellanos hit his second home run of the spring, and Victor Martinez belted his first. The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-1 yesterday. Hernán Pérez had two hits, and drove in three runs. The Brewers meet the Seattle Mariners this afternoon.

CopperDog 150
The ninth annual CopperDog 150 Dogsled Race begins tonight. Teams in both the 10-dog 150 and the six-dog CopperDog 80 will begin leaving the starting gate in downtown Calumet at 7:00. The opening ceremony will begin around 6:30. Defending CopperDog 150 champion Anny Malo is in the field, along with several other former winners, including two-time champion Dennis LaBoda.
