In high school softball yesterday…
– Calumet swept L’Anse, 4-0 and 10-5. Emily Erkkila was the winning pitcher in both games. Kendra Kerenan had two hits in both games. Celia Peterson, Vera Peterson and Leah Kiilunen each added two hits in the opener.
– Houghton v Jeffers – no report.
– Baraga split a doubleheader with Munising, winning one game 12-7, and dropping the other 15-14.

In the Upper Peninsula track and field regionals yesterday…
– The Houghton boys and girls swept the Division One meet at Negaunee, with the host Miners second in each meet. The Gremlin boys won by a large margin, but the girls’ victory was by just a half-point. The Calumet boys placed fifth out of the five teams competing, and the girls fourth. For the Houghton boys, Clayton Sayen won the 400-meter dash, placed second in the 1600 and 800-meter runs, and anchored the winning 4×800 relay team. Justin Jurva won the 200-meter dash, and anchored the winning 4×200 relay team. Brad Ohtonen won the shot put and the discus throw. For the Gremlin girls, Cara Monette won the 100-meter hurdles, and Kendra Monette took the 100-meter run and the shot put. Both were members of the winning 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams. – The Hancock girls won the Division Two meet at West Iron County. The L’Anse girls came in fifth out of the five teams competing. On the boys side, the Bulldogs placed fourth, and the Purple Hornets fifth. For the Hancock girls, Madyson Wright won the 1600-meter and 3200-meter runs. Mary Jarvis won the 100-meter dash and the 100-meter hurdles, anchored the winning 4×200 relay team, and ran on the winning 4×800 relay team. For the Bulldog boys, Alex Dewald won the 200-meter dash, and was a member of the winning 4×200 relay team. See full results here.
– The Lake Linden-Hubbell boys and girls swept the Division Three meet at Lake Linden. On the boys side, Ontonagon was fourth, followed by Dollar Bay, Chassell, Jeffers, and Ewen-Trout Creek. For the Lakes, Brendan Middleton won the 100-meter dash and the long jump, and anchored the winning 400-meter relay team. Lucas Klein took the shot put and the discus throw. On the girls side, Ontonagon finished second, followed by Chassell and Dollar Bay. Ewen-Trout Creek and Jeffers placed eighth and ninth. Shitaye Sam from Chassell won the 1600-meter run, and anchored the winning 3200-meter relay team. Lori Wardynski from Ontonagon took the 100-meter dash, the 100-meter hurdles and the high jump. Paige Blake from Ontonagon won the 400-meter and 800-meter runs. See full results here.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers had yesterday off, and begin a home set against the Rays tonight. Anibal Sanchez will start against Matt Andriese. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Chicago Cubs 5-3 yesterday. Chris Carter and Kirk Nieuwenhuis homered. Junior Guerra struck out 11 over seven innings to earn the win.

The Brewers open a series against the Mets in New York tonight. Wily Peralta will pitch against Steven Matz.

NHL
In the NHL playoffs last night, the Sharks blanked the Blues 3-0, and now lead the Western Conference final two games to one. The Lightning and Penguins play tonight – Pittsburgh leads the Eastern Conference final two games to one.

NBA
In the NBA playoffs last night, the Cavaliers smothered the Raptors 108-89. Cleveland leads the Eastern Conference final two games to none. No games are scheduled tonight.
