Houghton Hockey Edges Calumet to Remain Unbeaten – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey last night…
• Jace DeForge’s third-period power play goal lifted Houghton to a 2-1 victory over Calumet. Mike Maillette gave the Gremlins an early lead with a first period tally. Cam Anderson tied the game in the second period. Bryant Lee got the win in net. Hunter Touroniemi stopped 44 shots to keep the Copper Kings in the game. Houghton heads into the holiday break still unbeaten. Calumet continues to look for its first win. Hear the game replay here.

In boys basketball last evening…
• Chassell defeated Hancock 48-37. Eli Danison led the Panthers with 21 points and Kalvin Kytta added 12. Alex Pietila and Shaun Kilpela each scored 12 points for the Bulldogs.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell got past Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 66-59.
• Baraga shut down L’Anse 62-24. Carter Schjoth and Jayme Denomie each scored 16 for the Vikings. Easton Foucault led the Purple Hornets with 10.
• Ontonagon cruised past Republic-Michigamme 65-28.

In girls action…
• Hancock overwhelmed Chassell 59-16.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell smothered Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 54-6.
• Baraga outscored L’Anse 60-36.

On the boys schedule tonight…
• Houghton entertains Ontonagon.

The Houghton swim team swept Westwood yesterday.
• The girls claimed a 109-63 victory. Stella Soumis won the 50 and 100 freestyles. Fiona Bassard took the 200 freestyle, Kayleigh Carlson the 100 butterfly, and Ross Dennis the 100 breaststroke.
• The boys earned a 117-26 win. Beau Haataja took the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Anderson Limkemann won the 500 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, Josh Bennet the 100 freestyle, and Oliver Anderson the 100 backstroke. Baha Saleem claimed the diving title. 

College Basketball

Marcus Tomashek sank three free throws with 33 seconds remaining to give the Michigan Tech men’s basketball team a 73-72 victory over 24th-ranked Winona State yesterday afternoon. Tomashek finished with 30 points.

The Tech women’s team dropped a 59-56 heartbreaker at Winona State last evening. The Huskies grabbed an early lead, but the Warriors surged from behind in the fourth quarter. Isabella Lenz led the Huskies with 19 points.

The Northern Michigan men’s team defeated Northwood 80-64 yesterday. Dylan Kuehl scored 19 for the Wildcats, who have won four straight.

The NMU women’s team stopped Northwood 68-43. Jacy Weisbrod led the Wildcats with 17 points.

NHL

The Red Wings visit the Jets tonight. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit has brought veteran goaltender Michael Hutchinson up from Grand Rapids to back up James Reimer. Coach Derek LaLonde said yesterday that the lower body injury Ville Husso suffered Monday night will keep him off the ice “for a while.” Alex Lyon is recovering from an upper body injury, and may not return until after the league’s Christmas break.

NBA

The Pistons host the Jazz tomorrow.
