Houghton Hockey Falls in State Semis – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

The Houghton hockey season ended with a 2-1 overtime loss to East Grand Rapids in the state semifinals yesterday. Camden Markham’s power play goal early in the second period held up until the Pioneers pulled their goalie, and Tyler Sikkenga slipped in a shot with 16 seconds remaining to force the extra period. Charlie Hoekstra’s goal late in the first overtime was the game-winner. The Gremlins outshot the Pioneers 34-24, but end their fine season with a record of 26-3.

East Grand Rapids will face Flint Powers Catholic for the Division Three title today. Byron Center will play Brother Rice for the Division Two crown, and Detroit Catholic Central will take on Brighton for the Division One title.

In boys basketball playoff district finals last night…
• In Division Four, District 98, Jeffers dispatched Lake Linden-Hubbell 74-57. Levi Frahm led the Jets with 36 points, Matthew Schutz added 14, and Tavin Larson 13. Gabe Popko scored 20 for the Lakes, and Danny Marcotte added 16.
• In Division Four, District 97, Ironwood edged Wakefield-Marenisco 59-56.

The Jets and Red Devils will meet in the regional semifinal Monday at 6:00 at Houghton High School. Watersmeet and Stephenson will play in the other Division Four semifinal at Kingsford.

The schedules for both the Houghton and Baraga girls basketball state quarterfinal games on Tuesday have been adjusted.
• In Division Two, Houghton’s game against Frankenmuth has been moved from Big Rapids to Gaylord, and will start at 5:00. Coverage of the quarterfinal game will begin at 4:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
• In Division Four, Baraga’s contest against Mackinaw City at Munising has been moved up from 7:00 to 6:00.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball season ended with a tough 65-63 loss to Trevecca Nazarene in the NCAA Midwest Regional quarterfinals last night. The Huskies overcame a 14-point deficit in the third quarter, but couldn’t complete the comeback. Alex Rondorf recorded a double-double, with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Tech closes its season with a record of 25-7, and was unbeaten at home.

The Northern Michigan men’s team begins the playoffs tonight at 7:30. The fifth-seeded Wildcats will face fourth-seed Hillsdale. The Midwest Regional is being hosted by the University of Indianapolis.

College Hockey

Michigan Tech will host Northern Michigan in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association semifinal game tonight. Face-off is at 6:07 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. Minnesota State will host Ferris State in the other semifinal. The championship game will be played next Saturday.

GLHL

The Calumet Wolverines lost 9-1 to the De Pere Deacons last night. The Wolverines visit the Fox Cities Ice Dogs tonight.

The Portage Lake Pioneers have the weekend off.

NHL

The Red Wings host the Bruins this afternoon. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons entertain the Pacers this evening. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Tigers fell to the Yankees 4-3 yesterday. Eric Haase, Kerry Carpenter and Andrew Knapp homered for Detroit. Starter Spencer Turnbull pitched into the third, gave up a run on one hit, and struck out three.

The Tigers face the Braves this afternoon. Matt Manning will start for Detroit.

The Brewers pounded the Guardians 12-3 in Cactus League play. Brandon Woodruff gave up a run over three innings, and struck out four. Mike Brosseau had three hits, including a home run, and drove in four runs.

Milwaukee faces the Royals today. Eric Lauer will start for the Brewers.

Nordic Skiing

The annual UP Health System Great Bear Chase takes place today at the Swedetown Trails. The schedule includes 50k, 25k and 10k classic and freestyle events, along with a 50k skiathlon. See details here.
