Houghton Hockey in State Semifinal This Morning – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

The Houghton high school hockey team will face Cranbrook Kingswood in a Division Three state tournament semifinal this morning at 11:00 at the USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth. Coverage will begin at 10:30 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf. Bay Reps and East Grand Rapids will play in the other semifinal today at 1:30. The title match will take place tomorrow at 3:00.

The Division Two semifinals were held yesterday. Byron Center defeated Saginaw Heritage 6-2. Trenton blanked Lakeland 5-0. The title game will be played tomorrow at 11:00.

The Division One semifinals will be staged today. Detroit Catholic Central takes on Muskegon Reeths-Puffer in the first. Brighton plays Clarkston in the second. The championship game will be played tomorrow night at 7:00.

The Lake Linden-Hubbell boys basketball team’s season ended with a 66-52 loss to Forest Park in the regional championship game last night at Negaunee. The Lakes close their campaign with a record of 22-4. The Trojans advance to the quarterfinals, where they’ll play St. Ignace. The Saints dispatched Munising 58-42 to win their region. The quarterfinal match will be played Tuesday at 7:00 at Gladstone High School.

In Division Three, Menominee defeated Elk Rapids 58-37, and will face McBain Tuesday in the quarterfinals. In Division Two, Kingsford got past Ludington 37-34, and will face Flint Powers Catholic in the quarterfinals.

Girls basketball district champions will be determined tonight.
• In Division Three, West Iron County hosts Westwood.
• In Division Four, District 97, Ewen-Trout Creek plays at Ironwood at 5:30 Central Time.
• In Division Four, District 98, Lake Linden-Hubbell hosts Hancock at 6:00.
• In Division Four, District 99, Baraga entertains Ishpeming at 6:00.

College Hockey

Michigan Tech opens the Central Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs tonight against Bowling Green. The Huskies are seeded third, and the Falcons sixth. Games will face off at 7:07 tonight and 6:07 tomorrow night. If needed, a third game will be played Sunday. 

Fifth-seeded Northern Michigan will play at fourth-seed Minnesota State this weekend.

College Basketball

Both Northern Michigan teams will compete in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference basketball tournament this weekend.
• The women’s event is being held at Grand Valley State. The host Lakers will face fifth-seed Parkside in tomorrow’s first semifinal. Third-seed Northern will take on second-seed Ferris State in the second game. The championship match will be played Sunday.
• Northern is hosting the men’s tournament. The top-seed Wildcats will play fourth-seed Grand Valley tomorrow at 1:00. Third-seed Ferris State and seventh-seed Wayne State will tip off at 3:30. The title game will be played Sunday at 2:00.

GLHL

The Calumet Wolverines host the Fox Cities Ice Dogs tonight at 7:30, and the Eagle River Falcons tomorrow at 6:00.

The Portage Lake Pioneers welcome the Falcons tonight and the Ice Dogs tomorrow, with both games beginning at 7:30.

NHL

The Red Wings visit the Coyotes tonight. Coverage will begin at 9:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

The NHL trade deadline is this afternoon at 3:00.

NBA

The Pistons claimed a rare win last night, defeating the Nets 118-112. Jaden Ivey led Detroit with 34 points, and Cade Cunningham added 32. Jalen Duren snared 14 rebounds.

The Pistons host the Mavericks tomorrow night.

MLB

Half of the Tigers dropped a 5-4 decision to the Blue Jays yesterday. Kenta Maeda took the loss, allowing two runs on four hits over three innings. Parker Meadows and Jace Jung homered. The other half of the team drubbed the Yankees 11-5. Starter Jack Flaherty struggled, giving up three runs in the first inning. Andy Ibáñez had a home run and a double.

The Tigers will play the Orioles this evening. Casey Mize will start.

The Brewers trounced the White Sox 8-2 yesterday. Starter Aaron Ashby pitched into the third, and gave up both Chicago runs. Brewer Hicklen and Wes Clarke homered.

The Brewers will split their squads for two games against the Athletics… one this afternoon, and one this evening.
