Houghton Hockey Routs Soo, Advances to State Semifinals – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

Houghton advanced to the semifinals of the state hockey tournament with a dominant 7-1 victory over Sault Ste. Marie in their quarterfinal game Saturday. Mike Maillette led the offense with four goals. Connor Arko, Hudson Markham and Jay Halonen also found the net. Cayd Escherich scored the only Soo goal late in the first period. Bryant Lee earned the win in goal, as the Gremlins outshot the Blue Devils 39-19.

Pairings for the state semifinals are expected to be announced later today. Both will be played in Plymouth on Friday. Joining Houghton in the semifinals are Traverse City St. Francis (5-1 over Alpena), East Grand Rapids (3-1 over Orchard Lake St. Mary’s) and Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook (3-0 over Riverview Gabriel Richard).

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team closed its regular season with a 6-0 victory over St. Thomas Saturday night. Blake Pietila made 18 saves to earn his third shutout of the season, and the 23rd of his career. Logan Pietila, Blais Richartz, Chase Pietila and Isaac Gordon netted goals for the Huskies, and Levi Stauber and Nick Williams claimed their first collegiate goals in the third period.

The win gives Tech the third seed in the upcoming Central Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs. They will host sixth-seed Bowling Green in a best-of-three series beginning Friday.

Northern Michigan blanked Bowling Green 1-0 in their regular-season finale Saturday. Connor Eddy scored the Wildcats’ lone goal, and Beni Halasz had to make just 11 saves to claim the shutout.

The Wildcats are seeded fifth in the CCHA tournament, and will play at fourth-seed Minnesota State next weekend.

Bemidji State claimed the MacNaughton Cup with a weekend sweep of Minnesota State. The Beavers will host eighth-seed Ferris State next weekend. Second-seed St. Thomas will entertain seventh-seed Lake Superior State.

College Basketball

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams closed their regular seasons with losses to Grand Valley State Saturday.

The women fell 57-46 to the second-ranked Lakers. Isabella Lenz led the Huskies with 14 points. Tech is seeded fourth in the upcoming Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament, and will host fifth-seed Parkside in a quarterfinal game Wednesday night at 6:00.

The men fell 92-86 to GVSU. Dan Gherezgher scored 25 for the Huskies, and Marcus Tomashek added 23. Those teams will meet again in the GLIAC tournament quarterfinals Wednesday, with the fifth-seeded Huskies traveling to Allendale to play the fourth-seeded Lakers.

Both Northern Michigan teams wrapped up the regular season with victories over Davenport University Saturday.

The women claimed a 64-54 win, with Makaylee Kuhn scoring 19 points. The Wildcats have the third seed in the GLIAC tournament, and will host sixth-seed Wayne State Wednesday.

The men’s team clinched the regular-season conference championship with an 83-64 victory. Carson Smith scored 16 points. The top-seeded Wildcats will entertain eighth-seed Purdue Northwest Wednesday.

In other GLIAC women’s quarterfinals on Wednesday, top-seed Grand Valley State will host eighth-seed Purdue Northwest, and second-seed Ferris State will host seventh-seed Saginaw Valley State.

In other GLIAC men’s quarterfinals Wednesday, second-seed Lake Superior State will entertain seventh-seed Wayne State. Third-seed Ferris State will host sixth-seed Parkside.

GLHL

The Calumet Wolverines routed the Marquette Mutineers 16-3 Saturday night.

NHL

The Red Wings suffered a 4-0 loss to the Panthers Saturday. Alex Lyon stopped 33 of 37 shots, and took the loss in net.

The Wings visit the Avalanche Wednesday. Coverage will begin at 9:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons visit the Magic tonight. Coverage will begin at 5:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Tigers dropped a 7-3 decision to the Pirates Saturday. Starter Jack Flaherty gave up a solo home run over two innings. Jason Foley gave up three runs, and didn’t last an inning in a relief appearance. Andy Ibáñez homered.

The Tigers will face the Yankees this afternoon. Matt Manning will start for Detroit. Coverage will begin at 1:00 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers endured an ugly 11-3 loss to the Dodgers Saturday. Starter Janson Junk gave up three runs over two innings, and took the loss. Joel Payamps allowed four runs, and Aaron Ashby was touched for four

The Brewers will face the Diamondbacks this afternoon. Freddy Peralta will start.
