Houghton Hockey Ties Marquette, Claims Conference Title – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey last evening…
• Houghton wrapped up its regular campaign with a 1-1 tie against Marquette. Brody Sheldon gave the Sentinels a brief lead in the second period. A Mike Maillette goal quickly tied the game. The stalemate gave the Gremlins sole possession of the Great Lakes Hockey League title, and a season record of 21-2-2. Marquette takes second place.

The hockey playoffs begin a week from today, with Houghton facing Calumet in the first regional semifinal at 4:00 at the SDC. Hancock and Jeffers will meet in the second semifinal at 6:00. Both games will be broadcast on KBear 102.3.

In high school boys basketball last night…
• Houghton defeated Bessemer 74-37. Isaiah Lawson led the Gremlins with 19 points, and Luke Hill added 16.
• Calumet fell to Gwinn 38-35. Blake Tarvis scored 18 for the Copper Kings.
• Hancock lost at Iron Mountain 80-31.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell got past Stephenson 58-50. Danny Marcotte scored 25 for the Lakes, and Gabe Popko added 24.
• Jeffers outlasted Escanaba 75-68 in overtime. Matthew Schutz had 37 points and 11 rebounds. Levi Frahm scored 21.
• L’Anse v West Iron County – no report.

The Houghton swim team competes at the U.P. championships today at Marquette. Yesterday’s diving results have not been reported.

The Calumet and L’Anse bowling teams will compete at the U.P. tournament today at Superior Entertainment in Marquette.

College Basketball

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams host Northern Michigan today. The women’s game starts at 1:00, and the men’s game at 3:00.

College Hockey

Both the Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan hockey teams have the weekend off.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers lost 7-5 to the Fox Cities Ice Dogs last night. They’ll visit the De Pere Deacons this evening.

The Calumet Wolverines fell 7-4 at De Pere last night, and play at Fox Cities tonight.

Adult Hockey

The L’Anse Winter Classic Old-Timer’s Hockey Tournament will be held at Meadowbrook Arena in L’Anse today and tomorrow. The event is a major fundraiser to support operations of the Meadowbrook and Baraga rinks. The public is welcome. For details and the weekend schedule, click here.

NHL

The Red Wings visit the Flames today. Coverage will start at 3:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons are off for the all star break, and return to action at Indiana Thursday.

MLB

The Tigers have signed former Brewers outfielder and first baseman Keston Hiura to a minor league contract. Hiura hit 50 home runs over parts of four seasons in Milwaukee. He spent all of last season with the Brewers’ top farm team in Nashville, where he hit 23 home runs.

The Dodgers have signed former Tigers reliever Justin Wilson to a minor league contract. Wilson hasn’t pitched since early in the 2022 season, when he underwent Tommy John ligament replacement surgery. He came back to make an appearance for the Brewers last summer, but suffered a lat strain during his warmup, and missed the rest of the season.

Former Brewers and Tigers pitcher Jacob Barnes has signed a minor league deal with the Nationals.
