High School

In high school hockey Saturday…
• Houghton outskated Detroit Jesuit 5-2. Landon Stevens had two goals and an assist. Camden Markham had a goal and three assists. Gab Carlson and Jace Deforge also scored. Bryant Lee made 25 saves, as the Gremlins remained unbeaten.
• Calumet fell to Brother Rice 6-0. The Warriors outshot the Copper Kings 51-23.
• Jeffers fell 3-2 to Rhinelander in the championship game at the Merrill Tournament.

The Houghton swim team at the Marquette Splash-n-Dash Invitational Saturday – no report.

College Hockey

13th-ranked Michigan Tech lost to Saint Thomas 3-2 Saturday. Levi Stauber and Evan Orr scored for the Huskies. The Tommies’ Luc Laylin netted the game-winner with 3:33 left in the game.

Northern Michigan had the weekend off.

The Finlandia men’s hockey team lost 7-1 at Adrian College Saturday. Phil Schader scored the Lions’ only goal, as Finlandia was outshot 52-6.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team fell to Trine University 4-1 Saturday. Lauren Benoit scored for the Lions, who were outshot 46-12 by the Thunder.

College Basketball

Michigan Tech’s basketball teams earned a split at Northern Michigan Saturday.
• The women’s team built an early lead, and cruised past the Wildcats 69-56. Ellie Mackay led Tech with 19 points.
• The men’s team fell 90-65. Dan Gherezgher led the Huskies with 14 points. Tech recorded just five assists.

The Finlandia men’s basketball team lost to Grace Christian 97-75 Saturday. Octavious Johnson led the Lions with 16 points. Noah Prestia and Ilrick Higgins-Moise each added 11.

GLHL

The Calumet Wolverines lost 13-1 to the Vail Yeti Saturday.

The Portage Lake Pioneers fell to the Eagle River Falcons 5-4 Saturday.

NHL

The Red Wings’ late surge fell short in a 4-3 loss to the Blue Jackets Saturday. Olli Maatta, Jake Walman and Lucas Raymond scored in the third period. Ville Husso made 21 saves.

The Wings visit the Avalanche Monday. Coverage will begin at 2:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons host the Knicks this afternoon at 1:00.

NFL

The NFL Wild Card Playoff games begin today…
• The 49ers scored 18 points in the fourth quarter, and eliminated the Seahawks 41-23.
• The Jaguars overcame a 27-point first half deficit to edge the Chargers 31-30. Riley Patterson’s 36-yard field goal as time expired won the game.

Today…
• The Bills entertain the Dolphins at 1:00.
• The Vikings host the Giants at 4:30.
• The Bengals welcome the Ravens at 8:15.

The Cowboys visit the Buccaneers Monday night.

Former Brewers’ outfielder Andrew McCutchen has signed a one-year deal with the Pirates. McCutcheon is 36 years old. He had his best years in Pittsburgh early in his career, when was named National League MVP, and made five straight All-Star Teams.
