Houghton Hockey Wins, Calumet Falls – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey last night…
• Houghton stopped Traverse City Central 5-2. Camden Markham and Mike Maillette each had a goal and an assist for the Gremlins. Landon Stevens, Jace Deforge and Connor Rafaelli also scored. Bryant Lee made 15 saves to earn the win in net.
• Calumet fell 4-1 to Hartland. Nolan Sturos scored the Copper Kings’ only goal in the third period. Aksel Loukus made 31 saves.

In hockey this afternoon…
• Houghton hosts Hartland. Coverage begins at 12:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
• Jeffers entertains Manistique at 1:00.
• Hancock hosts Traverse City Central at 1:00.

In girls basketball last night…
• Houghton defeated Ishpeming 64-46.
• Hancock shut down Jeffers 60-16. Kaisa Salani and Isabella Hebert each scored 15 for the Bulldogs. Sara Johnson led the Jets with 12 points.
• Baraga got past Ontonagon 38-33.
• Chassell outscored Watersmeet 41-35. Ally Etelamaki paced the Panthers with 14 points and seven rebounds. Trisha Pietila had a double-double, with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Both Copper Country Christian School teams fell to Maplewood last night. The girls lost 58-27. Nora Holmes paced the Warriors with nine points. The boys fell 52-41, as Daba Holmes scored 23 and Elijah Packard chipped in 10. Those teams will play again this morning.

A local high school football standout will be on the field again tomorrow. DySean Allen from L’Anse earned a roster spot at the 2021 Indigenous Bowl, which will kick off at 10:00 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. Allen will represent the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community. He’s the only Michigan player on the roster, which includes members of more than two dozen tribes ranging from Mississippi to the west coast. Allen was chosen because of his on-field performance, along with his academic accomplishments and community involvement.

College Volleyball

The Michigan Tech volleyball team’s season ended with a tough 3-2 (28-26, 25-27, 25-22, 16-25, 11-15) loss to Hillsdale in the NCAA tournament regional semifinals yesterday. Olivia Ghormley powered the Huskies with 20 kills. Anna Jonynas added 17 kills and matched her career-best with 27 digs. Laura De Marchi contributed 60 assists. All three, along with Megan Utlak, played their final games as Huskies.

College Basketball

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams play at Northwood today.

The Finlandia men’s basketball team lost 100-62 at the University of Northwestern in Saint Paul last night. B.J. Williams scored 12 for the Lions.

The Finlandia women’s team lost 54-41 at the University of Northwestern. Bailey Froberg led the Lions with 11 points.

Both Lions teams play at North Central today.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team fell 2-1 in overtime at second-ranked Minnesota State last night. Logan Pietila scored the Huskies’ only goal. Blake Pietila made 28 saves. Those teams play again tonight in Mankato.

The NMU hockey team stunned top-ranked Minnesota-Duluth 5-4 last evening. Those teams face off again this evening in Marquette.

The Finlandia men’s hockey team lost 6-3 at Lake Forest yesterday. Dylan Paavola, Zach Barriault and Tyler Watungwa scored for the Lions. Marcus Gloss made 37 saves in the loss.

The Finlandia women’s team dropped a tight 2-1 decision at Lake Forest yesterday. Michaela Powers scored for the Lions, and Laney Pasemko kept Finlandia in the game with 52 saves.

Both Finlandia teams play at Lake Forest again today.

GLHL

The Calumet Wolverines skated to a 7-4 victory over the Reno Ice Raiders last night. Scott Loukus scored twice, and Austin Rilei, Logan Rastello, Brent Loukus, Trevor Johnson and Miiko Karstu each found the net once. Ian Carroll got the win in net. Those teams play again tonight in Nevada.  

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings will entertain the New York Islanders tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift. 

NBA

The Detroit Pistons are off until Monday, when they host the Oklahoma City Thunder.

NFL

The Green Bay Packers have the weekend off.

The Detroit Lions entertain the Minnesota Vikings in a 1:00 game tomorrow. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
