Houghton Hockey Wins, Hancock and Calumet Fall – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school hockey last night…
– Hancock lost to defending Division One state champion Hartland 7-1. Colton Salani scored the Bulldogs’ only goal.
– Houghton overcame a three-point deficit, then held on to edge Traverse City Central 6-5. Tucker Tapani scored for the Gremlins in the first period. Brad Gauthier, Brendan Erickson and Seth Francois found the net in the second, as Houghton pulled into a 4-4 tie. P.J. Donnelly put the Gremlins on top early in the third period, and Nathan Erva scored the eventual game-winner a few seconds later.
– Calumet lost at Cranbrook Kingswood 6-3.

Today…
– Houghton hosts Hartland at 1:00.
– Hancock welcomes Traverse City Central at 1:00. Our broadcast on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com will begin at 12:40.
– Calumet skates at Cranbrook Kingswood again at 12:15.

In boys basketball last evening, Houghton got past Westwood 43-33.

The Houghton swim team competes at the Westwood Relays today.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University women’s hockey team lost 4-1 at Marian University last night. Rebecca Lilly scored the Lions’ only goal off a pass from Brenna Ceglar early in the second period. Annah Smiddy made 36 saves, as the Lions were outshot 40-18. Finlandia skates at Marian again this afternoon.

The Lions men’s hockey team suffered a 2-0 loss to Marian University last night at the Houghton County Arena. Marcus Gloss stopped 29 shots. The Lions welcome Lawrence University this afternoon at 5:15. Our coverage will start at 4:55 on 99.3 The Lift and 993TheLift.com.

Both Finlandia basketball teams are off this weekend.

MTU/NMU
The Michigan Tech hockey team skated to a 3-3 tie with Bemidji State last night, then won the extra Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings point in overtime. Eric Gotz, Thomas Beretta and Alec Broetzman scored during regulation for the Huskies. Jake Lucchini scored in the three-on-three unofficial extra period. Devin Kero stopped 25 shots in net. The Huskies and Beavers play again tonight. Faceoff is at 7:07 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

The NMU hockey team has the weekend off.

The Michigan Tech men’s and women’s basketball teams play at Northwood University today.

Both Northern Michigan University hoops teams will play at Saginaw Valley State today.

Both the Portage Lake Pioneers and the Calumet Wolverines are off this weekend.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons shut down the Chicago Bulls 107-88 last evening. Blake Griffin scored 20 points, and Andre Drummond grabbed 20 rebounds, as Detroit won its fourth straight game. The Pistons host the Golden State Warriors tonight.

The Pistons have assigned Luke Kennard to their Grand Rapids Drive affiliate for a rehab stint. Kennard has missed more than a month with an injured shoulder.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings skate at Boston this evening. Because of Finlandia University hockey on 99.3 The Lift, pregame coverage will begin at 6:40 on KBear 102.3.

NFL
The Detroit Lions entertain the Los Angeles Rams in a 1:00 game tomorrow. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.

The Green Bay Packers welcome the Arizona Cardinals in a 1:00 game tomorrow.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers have parted company with catcher James McCann and reliever Alex Wilson. Both were eligible for arbitration, but the team did not make offers. They become free agents. The Tigers did tender offers to six other arbitration-eligible players – Nicholas Castellanos, Shane Greene, Michael Fulmer, Matthew Boyd, Daniel Norris and Blaine Hardy.
