Houghton, Jeffers Earn Hockey Wins – Wednesday Sports Wrap

– Houghton blanked Marquette 5-0. Jonathan Bostwick had two goals and an assist. Marcus Gloss stopped 16 shots, and has not allowed a goal in the Gremlins’ first two games.
– Brendan Middleton’s second goal of the night gave Jeffers a 2-1 victory over L’Anse. Kyle Maki scored his first goal of the season for the Purple Hornets. Brendan Sullivan stopped 33 shots for the Jets, while Michael Turunen saved 34 for L’Anse.

NMU Men Defeat UM-D
The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team got past Minnesota-Duluth 56-53 last night. Terry Nash led a balanced attack with 11 points.

NHL – Red Wings Entertain Philadelphia
The Wings host the Flyers tonight. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA – Pistons Fall to Bucks
The Detroit Pistons’ cold start continued last night, with a 98-86 loss to the Bucks last night. Detroit scored 31 points in the first quarter… but was held to 19 or fewer in each of the remaining periods. Andre Drummond had 23 points and 10 rebounds, The Pistons have lost five in a row, and eight of their last nine. They entertain the Clippers tonight.

MLB – Carrera Becomes Free Agent
Detroit Tigers Circle LogoDetroit Tigers’ outfielder Ezequiel Carrera has elected to elected to become a free agent. Carrera was designated for assignment last week after Detroit claimed pitcher Josh Zeid off waivers from the Astros. Carrera was brought up from Toledo to help in center field after Austin Jackson was traded. He saw limited playing time. He could have accepted a minor-league assignment with Detroit, but has decided to look for opportunities elsewhere.
