High School Volleyball
In High School volleyball last night…
Houghton-Gremlins-Logo– Houghton edged Hancock 3-2 in a tight Copper Spike match. The Bulldogs took the fifth set 15-12.
– Calumet blanked Lake Linden-Hubbell 3-0.
– Dollar Bay shut out Watersmeet 3-0.
– Baraga and West Iron County v L’Anse triangular – NR.

High School Football
The high school football season wraps up tonight.
– Calumet could wrap up a playoff berth with a victory at Gladstone. Our pregame coverage begins at 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– Hancock plays at Houghton in the annual Copper Bowl. Our pregame coverage begins at 6:40 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell plays at Forest Park. Both of those teams are already in the playoffs.
– L’Anse entertains Munising. The Purple Hornets need to win tonight, and hope for some help, to reach the playoffs.
– Baraga plays its first eight-man football game at Ontonagon.
– Ewen-Trout Creek entertains Superior Central.

MTU Huskies LogoThe Michigan Tech hockey team returns to action tonight and tomorrow night at Ferris State.

The Tech football team puts its unbeaten record on the line tomorrow against Ferris State. Kickoff is at 1:00 at Sherman Field.

The Tech soccer team hosts Ferris State tonight. Kickoff is at 7:00 at Sherman Field. The Huskies entertain Grand Valley Sunday at noon.

The Tech volleyball team plays at Ferris State tonight, and at Grand Valley State Sunday afternoon.

Both Tech cross country teams run at the U.P. Championships at Northern Michigan University today.

In women’s tennis, Michigan Tech closed its season with a 9-0 victory over Findlay yesterday. The Huskies finish the season in an eighth-place tie with Saginaw Valley State in the GLIAC. The top eight teams begin conference tournament play today. Tech lost the tiebreaker procedure to the Cardinals, and will not be included in the field.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team plays at Lake Superior State tonight and tomorrow night.

The NMU football team plays at Ashland tomorrow afternoon.

Finlandia Volleyball
Finlandia Lions
The Finlandia University volleyball team visits Northland International University, where they’ll face the host Pioneers and Indiana University Northwest today, and again tomorrow.

The Finlandia women’s soccer match against Robert Morris-Lake County tomorrow morning has been canceled. The Lions will host Lakeland College Sunday morning at 11:00. The men’s team plays at Wisconsin-Oshkosh tomorrow, then returns home to face Lakeland College at 1:00 on Sunday.

Wolverines Open Season
Calumet Wolverines LogoThe Calumet Wolverines will make an early-season visit to Fond du Lac to play in the Keevin Cup Tournament. The Wolverines will face the host Bears tonight. The winner will face the winner of the Fox Cities-Waupun game for the Cup tomorrow night, with tonight’s losers playing in the consolation game tomorrow.

NHL – Red Wings Win in OT
Justin Abdelkader’s goal in overtime lifted the Detroit Red Wings to a 4-3 victory over the Penguins last evening. Henrik Zetterberg and Niklas Kronwall had scored in the third period to tie the game. The Wings skate at Philadelphia tomorrow night. Faceoff is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA – Pistons
The Detroit Pistons wrapped up their exhibition schedule with a 109-103 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers last night. Spencer Dinwiddie finished with eight points and six assists in 15 minutes in his first appearance for Detroit. The rookie is recovering from off-season knee surgery. The Pistons open the regular season at Denver Wednesday night. We will carry select Pistons games this season on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

In last night’s NFL game, the Broncos defeated the Chargers 35-21.

The Lions face the Falcons Sunday in London. Kickoff is at 9:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

The Packers play at New Orleans in the Sunday night game.

MLB – Coles Moves from Tigers to Brewers
Detroit Tigers Circle LogoDetroit Tigers’ assistant hitting coach Darnell Coles has accepted the head hitting coach position with the Milwaukee Brewers. Coles had been with the Brewers’ organization before the Tigers hired him at the start of the 2014 season… serving as the minor league hitting coach, and managing Milwaukee’s Double-A affiliate in Huntsville for two years.
