Houghton Wins MacInnes Tourney – Monday Sports Wrap

High School
Houghton-Gremlins-LogoHoughton claimed the title at the MacInnes Holiday Tournament with a 3-2 overtime victory over Calumet yesterday afternoon. Dawson McKay scored the game-winner. Jacob Kruse and Clayton Sayen also scored for the Gremlins. Brent Loukus and Jake Anderson scored for the Copper Kings. Will Stier stopped 31 shots for Houghton, and Ian Carroll made 26 saves for Calumet.

Hancock blanked Jeffers 7-0 in the consolation match. Jack Fenton finished with one goal and three assists for the Bulldogs, and Dawson Kero pitched the shutout.

The Gremlins advanced to the finals with a 6-3 win over Jeffers on Saturday. Calumet edged Hancock 2-1 on Robert Erkkila’s power play goal with less than three minutes remaining in the third period. That victory also gave the Kings the title for this year’s total-goals Copper Island Classic. The two official games of the Classic had ended with the teams tied at six goals each.

McKay was named the tourney MVP. Others named to the all-tourney team included Stiers in the net, Fenton and Calumet’s Jack Sturos on defense, and Kruse, Hancock’s Alex Nordstrom, and Calumet’s Rory Anderson on the forward line.

The Portage Lake Pioneers defeated the Calumet Wolverines 6-2 Saturday night. Pete Rouleau had two goals for Portage Lake, and Hunter Rijala added three assists. The Pioneers outshot the Wolverines 52-24. Brett Beaudry earned the win for Portage Lake.

The Detroit Red Wings skate at Minnesota tonight.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons will face the Knicks in New York tomorrow night.

NFL
The Detroit Lions defeated the San Francisco 49ers 32-17 yesterday. Matthew Stafford completed 29 of 37 passes, including two touchdown strikes.

The Green Bay Packers suffered an ugly 38-3 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. Aaron Rodgers completed just 15 of 28 passes, with a touchdown and an interception.

Tonight, the Cincinnati Bengals visit the Denver Broncos. Kickoff is at 8:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
