HS Baseball, Softball Playoffs Begin Today – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School

In baseball today, the Division Four District quarterfinals will be played at Ironwood…
• Lake Linden-Hubbell takes on Wakefield-Marenisco.
• L’Anse faces Jeffers.
• Hancock plays Ironwood.

In regular season softball this afternoon…
• Houghton entertains Westwood in a make-up game from April 21st. Coverage will begin at 3:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
• Calumet will host Escanaba.

In Division Four District softball quarterfinals at Hancock this afternoon…
• Bessemer plays Ironwood.
• Hancock takes on Lake Linden-Hubbell.

In track and field this afternoon…
• Houghton, Calumet and Hancock will compete at the WestPAC Championships at Calumet, in a meet that was rescheduled from last Wednesday.

College Baseball

The Finlandia University baseball team has added a new recruit. Kolby Wagatsuma is a catcher from Pearl City, Hawaii.

NHL

In the NHL playoffs last night, the Rangers buried the Hurricanes 6-2. New York wins that Eastern Conference semifinal series 4-3, and will take on the Lightning in the Eastern Conference championship series beginning tomorrow.

The Western Conference championship series begins tonight, as the Oilers visit the Avalanche.

NBA

The NBA championship series between the Celtics and the Warriors begins Thursday.

MLB

The Tigers outscored the Twins 7-5 yesterday. Spencer Torkelson singled home Jeimer Candelario with the eventual winning run in the seventh inning. Derek Hill hit his first major league home run. Beau Brieske pitched into the sixth, and gave up four runs.

Those teams will play a day-night doubleheader today in Detroit. Coverage of game one will begin at 12:50 on 99.3 The Lift, with Rony Garcia facing Devin Smeltzer. Coverage of game two will start at 6:50, with Joey Wentz pitching against Cole Sands.

The Tigers have placed outfielder Robbie Grossman on the disabled list because of muscle stiffness in his neck. Kody Clemens has been called up from Toledo.

The Brewers took two from the Cubs yesterday. In the opener, Milwaukee got a three-run homer from Luis Urías in the top of the seventh, and held on for a 7-6 victory. Jace Peterson and Tyrone Taylor also went deep. In the nightcap, Aaron Ashby turned in six strong innings in a 3-1 win. Taylor homered again, and Victor Caratini hit one out.

The Brewers visit the Cubs again tonight. Eric Lauer will start against Justin Steele.

Before yesterday’s games, Milwaukee placed starter Brandon Woodruff on the injured list with an ankle problem, and brought reliever Peter Strzelecki up from Nashville. Between yesterday’s contests, the Brewers sent game one starter Ethan Small back to the Sounds, and added reliever Luke Barker.
