The Los Angeles Angels broke open a scoreless game with five runs in the eighth inning, and defeated the Detroit Tigers 5-1 last night. Justin Verlander and Jhoulys Chacin matched pitch for pitch through the first seven innings. Verlander didn’t allow a baserunner until the fifth inning, and the Tigers didn’t get their first hit until the sixth. The Angels opened the eighth with three straight singles, a sacrifice bunt, and a fielder’s choice that allowed two runs to score on a throwing error by catcher James McCann. Buck Farmer relieved Verlander, and allowed two more runs. Four of the five runs were charged to Verlander, who took the loss.

The Tigers continue that series in Los Angeles this evening. Anibal Sanchez will pitch against Hector Santiago. Hear the first pitch at 10:05 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The St. Louis Cardinals scored four runs off Junior Guerra, and went on to a 6-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers yesterday afternoon. Guerra pitched into the seventh inning, and suffered his first loss since being called up from the minors at the beginning of the month. He was hurt by several defensive mistakes, including an error and a passed ball.

The Brewers host the Cardinals again tonight. Wily Peralta will pitch against Mike Leake.

– Dean Kangas-State Farm will host Superior National Bank-Stanton at the Dollar Bay field.

NBA
In the NBA playoffs, the Golden State Warriors advanced to the championship series by defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder 96-88 last night. After falling behind three games to one in the Western Conference final, the Warriors won three in a row to take the series. They’ll face the Cleveland Cavaliers for the Larry O’Brien Trophy beginning Thursday night.

NHL
The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the San Jose Sharks 3-2 in the opening game of the NHL Stanley Cup final last night. Game two will be played tomorrow night.
