HS Football Ticket Policies Clarified – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball tonight…
• Houghton welcomes Negaunee.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell journeys to Wakefield-Marenisco.
• Chassell plays at Jeffers.
• L’Anse visits Baraga.
• Ewen-Trout Creek entertains Watersmeet.

In cross country today, local teams will run at Hancock Invitational at the Maasto Hiihto Trails.

We’re getting some more details about attendance policies at this weekend’s high school football games.

While Calumet, Houghton and L’Anse have indicated there will be no general admission tickets sold for their contests, Lake Linden-Hubbell will be admitting fans. Athletic Director Jack Kumpula tells us tickets will be available at the gate, on a first come, first served basis. Sales will be cut off if attendance passes the maximum level set by COVID-19 guidelines, and all those who attend must wear masks.

Hancock will make 100 general admission tickets available on a first come, first served basis, beginning at 9:00 this morning at the high school office. Tickets will cost $5.00. Exact change will be required. Masks must be worn at the game.

College

The Big 10 will attempt to begin its college football season October 24th. Conference presidents and chancellors voted unanimously yesterday to play eight games over consecutive weeks, leading to a championship contest December 19th. No fans will be allowed at the games. The schedule should be released within a few days.

The decision came as news broke that 42 University of Wisconsin football players and staff members had tested positive for COVID-19 as of yesterday afternoon.

NCAA Division I college basketball can begin as early as November 25th. A vote yesterday by the D-I council doesn’t assure that games will be played – that will depend on the individual schools and conferences.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers lost to the Kansas City Royals 4-0 last night. The Tigers collected just two singles in the game. Tarik Skubal took the loss, despite turning in a quality start, giving up three runs on four hits over six innings, and striking out eight.

The Tigers begin a home set against Cleveland tonight. Casey Mize will pitch against Shane Bieber. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, coverage will begin at 6:45 on KBear 102.3.

The Milwaukee Brewers split their doubleheader against the Saint Louis Cardinals, falling 4-2 in the opener, and winning the nightcap 6-0.

In the first game, Keston Hiura’s two-run homer in the first inning gave Brandon Woodruff a quick lead. Woodruff gave up single runs in the second, fourth, fifth and sixth while going the distance, and taking the loss.

A three-run Ryan Braun homer helped the Crew open up a 4-0 lead in the first inning of the second game. Jacob Nottingham’s two-run shot in the sixth completed the scoring. Brent Suter and three relievers held the Cards to just two hits. Braun’s home run was the 350th of his career.

The Brewers have today off, and open a home series against the Royals tomorrow night.

NHL

The Eastern Conference final between the Lightning and the Islanders continues tonight. Tampa Bay leads the series 3-2.

NBA

The Heat and the Celtics will play game two of their Eastern Conference final this evening. Miami won the opener.

NFL

In tonight’s game, the Bengals visit the Browns. Coverage begins at 8:00 on 99.3 The Lift.

Please have your picks in The Wolf Pro Football Challenge turned in by noon today at one of our sponsors.

The Detroit Lions have signed cornerback Chris Jones, who spent the past couple of seasons in the Cardinals’ organization. He’ll fill in for Justin Coleman, who has been placed on injured reserve because of a hamstring injury. Cornerbacks Desmond Trufant and Jeff Okudah are also battling hamstring injuries.

The Detroit Lions play the Packers in Green Bay in a 1:00 game on Sunday. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.

Our high school football coverage begins tomorrow night, when Hancock entertains Gwinn… and Saturday, when Lake Linden Hubbell hosts Carney-Nadeau in the Lakes’ first-ever eight-player contest. Hear both games on KBear 102, and see our full broadcast schedule at KBear102.com.
