HS Hockey – Gremlins Fall, Jets Win – Wednesday Sports Update

– Houghton lost to Marquette 4-3 in overtime.
– Brendan Middleton’s power play goal with less than two minutes left in the second period snapped a scoreless tie, and Jeffers went on to defeat L’Anse 3-0. Clay Larson and Hunter Therrian added third period scores. Craig Mantila kept the Purple Hornets in the contest, stopping 59 shots in goal. Eli Norman made 16 saves to earn the shutout for the Jets.

Both Northern Michigan University basketball teams earned victories over Minnesota-Duluth last night. The women’s squad pulled away in the second period, and cruised to a 69-55 win. The men’s team took the lead for good with 24 seconds remaining, then hit four late free throws to seal a 71-65 victory.

MTU Athletics Logo BThe Michigan Tech men’s basketball team has introduced three high school players who will join the squad next year. Two are from the Upper Peninsula. Dawson Bilski is a guard on the North Central team that has won two straight Class D state titles. He averages 15 points and five assists per game. Trent Bell is a forward for Negaunee, where he averages 12 points and nine rebounds per contest. Kyle Clow is a forward from Germantown, Wisconsin.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University women’s hockey team lost a tough 1-0 decision at St. Norbert last night. Annah Smiddy stopped 40 of 41 shots in goal for the Lions. Finlandia managed only six shots on the Green Knights’ net.

The Detroit Red Wings will try to snap their four-game losing streak at Buffalo tonight. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Detroit Pistons LogoThe Detroit Pistons will try to break their four-game losing streak at home against the Miami Heat this evening.

The Pistons confirmed yesterday that they will be returning to downtown Detroit next season, after nearly four decades in the suburbs. They’ll share the new arena that’s being built for the Detroit Red Wings. The team will also build a new practice facility and organizational headquarters nearby.

Turkey Trot
Turkey Trot 2014The annual Turkey Trot Run/Walk will be held tomorrow. The 5k fun event will begin and end at UP Health System-Portage in Hancock. This is a free event for the whole family, but registration is required. You can sign up online here. You may also sign up in the hospital lobby tomorrow morning beginning around 8:30. Those who have already registered should arrive around 8:45. The event steps off at 9:00.
