Slow Pitch Softball

In Copper Country Slow Pitch Softball League play last evening…

• Pat’s Foods/Bucko’s v Sayen’s Auto/Coca Cola – no report.
• Amy J’s Pasty and Bake Shop defeated A&S Industrial/Loukus Tech 6-1.

Twilight League Baseball

The Copper Country Twilight Baseball League begins play tonight…
• Northern Driveline takes on Craig Heinonen Coldwell Banker at the Hancock Driving Park.
• REL Mohawk Technology meets Garnet’s Garage at the Houghton Field.

High School Basketball

The annual high school Border Bash basketball games were played last night, featuring all-stars from the U.P. taking on their counterparts from northern Wisconsin at Gogebic Community College.

The Northern Michigan girls team earned an 83-69 victory. Houghton’s Paige Sleeman scored 19 points, and was named the game’s Most Valuable Player.

The Northern Michigan boys team dropped an 89-88 heartbreaker, after a last-second three-point attempt missed the mark.

College Hockey

One of Michigan Tech’s most illustrious hockey players has died. Paul Coppo passed away Thursday in Green Bay, at age 83.

The Hancock native was a team captain and an All-American for the Huskies in 1960, his senior year. He led the 1964 U.S. Olympic team in scoring, and also played on the U.S. National team three times.

Coppo played 12 seasons with the Green Bay Bobcats, then coached the team, and eventually became an owner.

He was inducted into the Michigan Tech Sports Hall of Fame in 1985, the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004, and the Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006.

College Softball

The Finlandia University softball team has introduced a new recruit. Athena Dunham is from Palisade, Minnesota, and is transferring in from Hibbing Community College.

NHL

The Avalanche advanced to the Stanley Cup finals last night, edging the Oilers 6-5 in overtime. Colorado swept the Western Conference championship series 4-0.

The Eastern Conference championship continues tonight, as the Lightning host the Rangers. New York leads the series 2-1.

NBA

The NBA championship series continues tonight, as the Celtics entertain the Warriors. That set is tied 1-1.

MLB

The Tigers had yesterday today off, and begin a two-game set at Pittsburgh tonight. Tarik Skubal will pitch against José Quintana. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Austin Meadows could return from the injured list for tonight’s contest. He’s been sidelined with vertigo.

The Brewers also had yesterday off, and host the Phillies tonight. Jason Alexander will start against Ranger Suarez.

Horseshoes

In Copper Country Horseshoe League play last evening…
• Dreamland Two got past Buckos’ Party Store 6-3.
• Calumet One blanked Drift Inn 9-0.
• Rocky’s Bar outscored 41 Lumber 7-2.
• Ahmeek Fire Department edged L and L 5-4.
• Harter’s Party Store stopped Calumet Electronics 8-1.
• Dreamland One shut down Loading Zone 9-0.

Golf

The 20th annual Joe Evans Golf Classic will be held Saturday at Portage Lake Golf Course. Proceeds will support Omega House. It’s a three-person scramble. The cost is $300 per team. Contact Mike Lutz at Omega House at 482-4438 for more details, and to register your team.
