Huskies Beat Lions; V’Ball Regionals Moved – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School
In the regional finals of the high school volleyball tournament tonight…
– In Class B… Houghton will face Cadillac at 6:00 at Sault Ste. Marie. The initial schedule had the game placed at Grayling, but that was changed yesterday.
– In Class C… Calumet will take on Iron Mountain in the regional final tonight at 6:30 at L’Anse. That game had originally been scheduled for Gladstone, but that was also changed yesterday.

The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team cruised to an easy 71-59 exhibition victory over Finlandia University last night. The Lions kept the game close through much of the first half. The Huskies pulled out to a 13-point lead at the break, and never looked back. Luke Heller scored 16 for Tech, and freshman Kyle Monroe grabbed 14 rebounds. Brandon Robinette led the Lions with 15 points.

The MTU women’s basketball team has added three players for next season. Abbey Ostman from Saint Ignace, Hannah Hobson from Stoughton, Wisconsin, and Baillie McGirk from Rockford, Illinois, all signed letters of intent yesterday.

The Detroit Red Wings host the San Jose Sharks tomorrow night. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Detroit defenseman Kyle Quincey will undergo surgery to remove bone spurs from his right ankle. He’ll miss several weeks. Center Pavel Datsyuk says he’ll decide after today’s practice if he’s ready to make his season debut in tomorrow night’s game. He’s recovering from ankle surgery.

The road-weary Detroit Pistons got off to a cold start, and lost at Sacramento 101-92 last night. The Kings led by 13 at the end of the first quarter. Reggie Jackson and Marcus Morris each scored 16 points for Detroit. The Pistons visit the Los Angeles Clippers Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is at 3:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
