Huskies Fall in GLIAC Soccer Tourney – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School
The high school volleyball tournament continues tonight.
– In Class C, Calumet will face Houghton at 7:00 at Calumet. Hancock and Chassell play in the other district semifinal at 7:00 at Chassell. The winners of tonight’s games will meet for the district title tomorrow night.
– The Class D District title will be decided tomorrow night, when Dollar Bay-Tamarack City and Lake Linden-Hubbell play at 7:30 at Dollar Bay.

MTU
The Michigan Tech soccer team ended its season with a 5-0 loss to top-seeded Grand Valley State in the opening round of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament yesterday.

The Tech women’s basketball team is ranked 21st in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association NCAA Division II Preseason Top 25 Poll. The Huskies open their season with an exhibition game at Wisconsin-Green Bay tomorrow night.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings built on an early lead, and defeated the Arizona Coyotes 5-3 last night. Darrren Helm and Dylan Larkin each had a goal and an assist. Jimmy Howard stopped 30 shots. The Wings skate at Ottawa tomorrow night. Pregame will begin at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons lost 113-93 to the Los Angeles Lakers last night. Tobias Harris led Detroit with 18 points, and Andre Drummond grabbed 12 rebounds. The Pistons host the Milwaukee Bucks Friday night. Tip-off is at 7:00 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB
Justin Verlander gave up just two runs on three hits over six innings, but his Houston Astros lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-1 last night in game six of the World Series. The classic will be decided tonight in Los Angeles. Lance McCullers, Jr. will face Yu Darvish.

Ramon Santiago is apparently returning to the Detroit Tigers. Reports indicate that he’ll become manager Ron Gardenhire’s new first base coach. Former first base coach Omar Vizquel had already indicated that he would not be staying with the team. Santiago spent two terms totaling 10 years with Detroit as an infielder. The Tigers have not confirmed the hire.

Youth Hockey
Boys and girls ages four to nine who have not played hockey before are invited to this Saturday’s Try Hockey for Free clinic. The event begins at 9:00 at the Colosseum. To register, click here. A similar event for kids in Ontonagon County will be held Saturday at 4:00 at the Ontonogan Recreation facility.
