Huskies Fall in GLI Opener – Monday Sports Wrap

MTU Hockey Falls at GLI
The Michigan Tech hockey team opened the 50th Great Lakes Invitational Tournament with a 2-1 loss to the University of Michigan Sunday afternoon. The Huskies outshot the Wolverines 41-21, but U of M goalie Steve Racine made 40 saves. Malcolm Gould scored Tech’s only goal midway through the first period. In yesterday’s other GLI opener, Michigan State shut out Ferris State 2-0. The Huskies will face the Bulldogs in the consolation match this afternoon at 3:30. The Spartans and Wolverines will play in the championship game.

Gremlins Win MacInnes Classic
In high school hockey over the weekend…
– Houghton edged Hancock 4-3 to claim the title at the MacInnes Holiday Classic on Saturday. Calumet took the consolation game, beating Sault Ste. Marie 3-1. Friday night, Houghton advanced to the championship game with a 6-1 victory over Calumet. Hancock pounded Sault Ste Marie 7-1.
– Jeffers lost at Escanaba 5-1 on Saturday. On Friday, the Jets fell to the Eskymos 9-3.

In girls’ high school basketball Saturday, Houghton lost to Gladstone 36-32.

Finlandia Hoops Today
The Finlandia University men’s basketball team entertains Manchester University this afternoon. Tip-off is at 1:00 at the Paavo Nurmi Center.

Calumet Wolverines LogoCalumet Wolverines Fall at Eagle River
In Great Lakes Hockey League play Saturday night, Eric Bausano scored a hat trick, but the Calumet Wolverines fell to Eagle River 8-7. Alex VanWagner scored twice for the Wolverines, who held a one-goal lead until late in the contest. The Falcons scored twice in the final 4:20 to claim the victory.

NHL – Red Wings Visit Boston
The Detroit Red Wings skate at Boston tonight. Faceoff is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA – Pistons Blast Cavaliers
The new-look Detroit Pistons blew out the Cavaliers 103-80 yesterday afternoon. Brandon Jennings led Detroit with 25 points. Andre Drummond had 16 points and 17 rebounds. LeBron James scored just 17 for Cleveland. Detroit set a franchise record by connecting on 17 of 31 three-point attempts. The Pistons play at Orlando tomorrow night. Tip-off is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NFL – Packers Win NFC North
Despite struggling with a calf injury, Aaron Rodgers led the Green Bay Packers to their fourth-straight NFC North title yesterday, beating the Detroit Lions 30-20. Rodgers completed 17 of 22 passes for two touchdowns. Detroit’s Matthew Stafford connected on only 20 of 41 passes. He threw for all three of Detroit’s touchdowns. The Packers claimed their fourth-straight NFC North title, and will enjoy a bye in the first round of the playoffs. The Lions will open the playoffs at Dallas Sunday afternoon at 4:40.

In the other opening-round playoff games…
– On Saturday, the Cardinals travel to Carolina, and the Ravens visit the Steelers.
– On Sunday, the Bengals play at Indianapolis.
