Huskies, Gremlins Earn Hockey Wins – Sunday Sports Wrap

In high school hockey yesterday…
– Houghton blanked Utica Eisenhower 6-0. Kevin Bostwick, P.J. Donnelly, Justin Norkol and Brendan Erickson each had a goal and an assist. Niko Rajala and Seth Francois also scored. Jimmy Pietila got the win in net, as the Gremlins outshot the Eagles 46-8.
– Jeffers lost 5-2 to Grand Rapids Catholic Central at the Gaylord DIII Challenge.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University women’s basketball team lost 73-42 to Baldwin-Wallace University in the consolation game of the Hope College Post-Exam Jam yesterday afternoon. Harlee Froberg led the Lions with 19 points, and was named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Lions men’s hockey team lost to Wisconsin-Stout 7-4 last night. Bryce Mitzel, Timo Kocar, Tyler Watungwa and Connor Hannon scored for the Lions. Santeri Seppinan gave up three goals in the first period, and was charged with the loss. Marcus Gloss replaced him at the beginning of the second period.

The Finlandia women’s hockey squad lost 1-0 at Concordia-Moorhead yesterday. Sarah Gundry made 41 saves to keep the Lions in the game.

Grayson Rietmeier’s goal in overtime lifted the Michigan Tech hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Alabama-Huntsville last night, and a split of their weekend series. The Chargers took a first-period lead, but Tommy Parrottino’s third-period power play tally forced overtime. Robbie Beydoun earned the win in net, as the Huskies outshot UA-H 37-15.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team completed a sweep of Ferris State University with a 4-2 win last night.

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team couldn’t overcome a slow start, and lost to 20th-ranked Lewis University 65-51 yesterday afternoon. The Huskies scored just nine points in the first quarter. They were able to pull back into a tie late in the third quarter, but went cold again, scoring just seven points in the fourth. Ellie Welsh led Tech with 15 points.

The Huskies men’s team shut down Wisconsin-Stout 81-39 yesterday. The Huskies scored the first 10 points of the game, and were never threatened. Dawson Bilski scored 25 points for Tech.

In the NCAA Division II National Championship football game, Ferris State University lost a wild 49-47 decision to Valdosta State.

GLHL
The Calumet Wolverines defeated the Mosinee Papermakers 5-3 last night. Logan Rastello scored twice. Jimmy Brey, Rory Anderson and Tyler Loukus each scored once. Bryan Miller made 36 saves.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings suffered a 4-3 shootout loss to the New York Islanders last night. Goals by Gustav Nyquist and Trevor Daley gave Detroit an early lead. The Islanders surged ahead with a pair of third-period goals before Thomas Vanek’s score with 63 seconds remaining forced the extra time. The Wings visit the Philadelphia Flyers Tuesday. NBA
The Detroit Pistons broke their six-game losing streak with a 113-104 victory over the Boston Celtics last night. Blake Griffin scored 29 points for Detroit, and Andre Drummond snared 20 rebounds. The Pistons host the Milwaukee Bucks tomorrow night.

NFL
On today’s NFL schedule, the Green Bay Packers visit the Chicago Bears in a 1:00 game. The Detroit Lions travel to Buffalo to face the Bills in a 1:00 game. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
