Huskies Hold On For Football Win – Friday Sports Wrap

MLB – Tigers Pounded Again
The Tigers’ pitching staff struggled again, as Detroit lost to the Kansas City Royals 15-7 last night. The Tigers took a brief lead when they scored three runs in the top of the first. That evaporated quickly, as Matt Boyd surrendered two runs in the first, and was charged with four more as he was chased from the game in the second inning. The Tigers scored three in the third to tie the game, but Kansas City added three runs against Kyle Ryan, and put the game away with six runs off Al Alburquerque and Tom Gorzelanny in the seventh inning. The Tigers return home to host Cleveland tonight. Kyle Lobstein will return from a long stint on the disabled list to start against Corey Kluber. Hear the first pitch at 7:08 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Tigers’ shortstop Jose Iglesias left last night’s game with an injured finger. The injury will be evaluated today. Dixon Machado has been called up from Toledo to help out.

Taylor Jungmann threw six innings of one-run ball, as the Milwaukee Brewers got past the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-3. Full details are here.

The Brewers open a weekend series at Cincinnati tonight. Matt Garza will pitch against Keyvius Sampson.

In high school football last night…
– Negaunee scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, and came from behind to beat Calumet 21-14. Quarterback Russ Bjorn scored both Copper Kings touchdowns on runs of 12 and seven yards. A late Calumet drive that could have tied or won the game ended with a fumble deep in Negaunee territory.
2015-09-03 - Westwood at Houghton– Houghton lost to Westwood 36-22.
– Hancock routed Ironwood 41-0.
– Baraga defeated Ontonagon 22-6.
– Ewen-Trout Creek fell to Stephenson 36-14.

MTU Football Wins Opener
The Michigan Tech football team broke out to a 20-2 halftime lead, then held on to beat Wayne State 20-15 last night. Brandon Cowie completed 18 of 23 passes for 178 yards and two touchdowns in his debut as the Huskies’ quarterback. He also led the team in rushing with 64 yards. Game details are here.

The MTU soccer team opens its season at Winona State tonight. After two straight trips to the NCAA Division II tournament, coach Michelle Jacob’s team is picked for a fourth-place finish in the GLIAC. The Huskies will play at Saint Cloud State Sunday afternoon.

The MTU volleyball team will begin its season at the Wildcat Open in Marquette. Everyone returns from last year’s squad, as coach Matt Jennings looks to take another step forward in his rebuilding program. The Huskies will face Upper Iowa State this morning at 11:00, and Fort Hayes State this afternoon at 5:00, with matches against Lake Superior State and Cedarville tomorrow.

The MTU cross country team runs at the U.P. Championships in Marquette today. The Tech women’s tennis team will host Grand Valley State tomorrow morning at 10:00, and Ferris State Sunday morning at 10:00.

The Northern Michigan University football team opens its season tomorrow at Northwood.

Finlandia to Open Football Program Tomorrow
The new Finlandia University football team will play its first-ever game tomorrow against Alma College. Kickoff is at 1:00 at McAfee Field. Hear Todd VanDyke’s interview with coach Tim Driscoll here.

Both Finlandia soccer teams play at Northland College this afternoon, and face MacMurray College in Ashland, Wisconsin tomorrow afternoon.

The Finlandia volleyball team is also in Ashland. They’ll face Central College and Gogebic Community College today, and Silver Lake College and Northland College tomorrow.

NFL – Lions and Packers End Preseason With Wins
Zach Zenner’s fourth-quarter touchdown lifted the Detroit Lions to a 17-10 preseason victory over the Buffalo Bills last night. Details are here.

Brett Hundley threw four touchdown passes as the Green Bay Packers closed their exhibition season with a 38-10 victory over the New Orleans Saints. Details are here.

Copper Harbor Trails Festival This Weekend
