Huskies Make NCAA Tourney – Monday Sports Wrap

MTU Football to Host Playoff Opener
The Michigan Tech football team will make its second appearance in the NCAA tournament on Saturday, and will host its first-ever tournament game. The Huskies were together when the announcement was made that they will entertain the Angelo State Rams from San Angelo, Texas. The first football playoff game to be held at Sherman Field will kick off Saturday at noon.

The Huskies reached the tournament with a 59-14 romp over Lake Erie College in their final regular-season game Saturday. The Huskies finish at 9-1 for only the fourth time in their 92-year history. They place second to unbeaten Ferris State in the GLIAC North. The Bulldogs are the top seed in the Super Region Four in the NCAA tournament.

The MTU hockey team is 10-0 for the first time in school history, after sweeping Bemidji State 4-2 Saturday night, and 2-1 Friday night. Jamie Phillips had another outstanding weekend in goal, stopping 33 shots on Saturday, and 35 on Friday. The Huskies are the only unbeaten team in the nation, and host ninth-ranked Minnesota State next weekend.

The Tech women’s basketball team opened its season by pulling out a 59-58 victory at Minnesota-Duluth Saturday. Kylie Moxley’s free throw with a minute to go proved to be the winning margin. Tech entertains Concordia-St. Paul Friday night.

The Michigan Tech soccer team’s season ended with a 2-1 loss to Bellarmine University in the opening round of the NCAA tournament Friday night.

NMU Sets Football Passing Record
The Northern Michigan University football team ended a disappointing season on an up note, thrashing Findlay 66-38 on Saturday. Wildcats quarterback Shaye Brown set a new school record by passing for 490 yards.

At the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Tournament, the NMU men’s basketball team fell to Indianapolis 88-51 Saturday, after losing 78-57 to Lewis Friday night. The Northern women’s team won both of its games at Moorhead State Classic… 49-45 over the host Dragons on Saturday, and 81-73 in overtime win over Minnesota-Crookston Friday night.

The NMU hockey team had the weekend off.

Finlandia Men Split with 8th-ranked Scholastica
Jesse Parker’s goal with two minutes remaining brought the Finlandia men’s hockey team into a 2-2 tie with eighth-ranked Saint Scholastica Sunday afternoon… but Luke Simpson responded for the Saints a minute later, to give Scholastica a 3-2 victory. On Saturday, Justin Scott’s goal early in the third period lifted the Lions to a 4-3 upset victory over the Saints. Finlandia plays at Wisconsin-Stout on Friday, and Wisconsin-Superior on Saturday.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team lost to Marian University 6-1 Saturday afternoon, and 7-4 Friday night. Brittney Coleman scored the Lions’ only goal in the Saturday game, and Brock Nelson had a goal and two assists on Friday. The women will skate at Concordia University on Saturday.

The Finlandia men’s basketball team opened its season with a 92-55 loss at Lakeland College Saturday afternoon. Jordan LaPlante led the Lions with 26 points. The women’s team began its season with an 87-57 loss at Hope College Saturday. Marissa Burke scored 25 points for the Lions.

High School Football Tourney Games Set
MHSAA LogoAll three of the Upper Peninsula 11-man football teams that have reached the state tournament semifinals will play their games at the Superior Dome. In Division Eight, Munising will face Beal City Friday evening at 7:00. In Division Seven, Ishpeming will take on Saginaw Michigan Lutheran Seminary Saturday at 2:00. In Division Five, Menominee will face Grand Rapids West Catholic Saturday at 11:00. In eight-man play, Cedarville plays Lawrence Saturday at Greenville for the state title.

NHL – Canadiens Win Sixth Straight
The Detroit Red Wings lost to the Canadiens 4-1 last night. It’s the sixth-straight win for Montreal. The Wings skate at Columbus tomorrow night. Faceoff is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA – Pistons Play Tonight
The Detroit Pistons host the Magic tonight.

The Detroit Lions managed only a pair of field goals yesterday, and lost to the Cardinals 14-6. Matthew Stafford was held to just 183 yards passing. The loss drops Detroit into a first-place tie with the Packers in the NFC North. The Lions play at New England on Sunday. Kickoff is at 1:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

The Packers throttled the Eagles 53-20. Aaron Rodgers passed for 341 yards and three touchdowns. The Packers play at Minnesota Sunday.

In last night’s game, the Patriots blasted the Colts 43-20.
