Finlandia
Both Finlandia University soccer teams visit Maranatha Baptist this afternoon.

Matt Farrell has been named head coach of the Finlandia University softball team. Farrell coached the Lions’ baseball team from 2004 to 2010, and returned as an assistant coach last season. He takes over for Katherine Hannagan, who left after three years to become the head coach at Cardinal Stritch University.

MTU
The Michigan Tech hockey team has been picked to finish fourth in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association this season. The Huskies received one first place vote in the Mankato Free Press coaches’ preseason poll, but finished behind Minnesota State, Northern Michigan and Bowling Green. Northern dominated the preseason all-conference team, with Adam Rockwood, Troy Loggins, Philip Beaulieu and Atte Tolvanen earning honors. Rockwood was named preseason Player of the Year. Tech’s Jake Lucchini received honorable mention votes.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers had yesterday off, and begin a series at Minnesota tonight. Spencer Turnbull will start for the Tigers. The Twins have not yet named a starter. Pregame coverage will begin at 7:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers took a big step toward the playoffs last night, with a 6-4 victory over the Saint Louis Cardinals. Ryan Braun homered, and Eric Thames scored the winning run in the eighth inning, racing home from third base after Saint Louis reliever Bud Norris hit Mike Moustakas in the back at first base with a pickoff throw. Milwaukee used nine pitchers in the game.

The Brewers continue that series at Saint Louis tonight. Gio Gonzalez will pitch against Austin Gomber.

The Cubs lost, so Milwaukee now trails Chicago by a game-and-a-half in the National League Central Division, and leads Saint Louis by three games in the race for the top wild card playoff berth.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings will play their next preseason game tonight in Chicago. Listen for regular-season Red Wings games this season on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL
In last night’s NFL game, the Pittsburgh Steelers did all their scoring in the first half, then held off a Tampa Bay comeback to edge the Buccaneers 30-27. If you played The Wolf Pro Football Challenge, you must have picked at least nine games correctly to qualify to be our weekly winner.

Our high school football coverage will continue with two games on Friday. Calumet will try to clinch a playoff berth at Iron Mountain on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. Hancock plays at Westwood on 99.3 The Lift and TheLift.com.
