Huskies to NCAA Tourney – Monday Sports Wrap

Calumet GBB 2015-03-22Calumet Girls Win State Title
The Calumet girls basketball team overcame a slow start, and defeated Flint Hamady 57-49 in the Class C state championship game Saturday afternoon. The Copper Kings trailed by six at the end of the first quarter… but tied the game at halftime… and outscored the Hawks 20-13 in the fourth quarter. Lexie Rowe led Calumet with 22 points, and Clara Loukus added 10. Terilynne Budreau grabbed a dozen rebounds, and Ellen Twardzik captured 11. It’s the first state title for an Calumet high school basketball team.

Saint Ignace won the Class D title Saturday, overcoming a 20-point deficit early in the third quarter to edge Pittsford 64-60 in overtime.

MTU Hockey Falls in WCHA Final, Reaches NCAA Tourney
The Michigan Tech hockey team lost to Minnesota State 5-2 in the WCHA tournament title game Saturday. The Huskies took an early lead on goals by Blake Pietila and Alex Petan, but the Mavericks scored the final four goals of the contest to take the Broadmoor Trophy. Tech defeated Bowling Green 5-2 Friday night to advance to the championship game.

Despite the loss, the Huskies are preparing for their first NCAA tournament appearance in 34 years. The Huskies will face Saint Cloud State in the opening round Friday afternoon at 4:30 in Fargo. North Dakota and Quinnipiac will meet in the other Regional semifinal game.

Pioneers Take Gibson Cup
The Portage Lake Pioneers retained possession of the storied Gibson Cup by defeating the Calumet Wolverines 5-1 Friday night. Eric Bausano gave the Wolverines an early lead, but the Pioneers responded quickly, and led 3-1 at the end of the first period. Alex Roy’s third goal of the series was the game-winner. Mike Madosh finished with 34 saves for Portage, and Ryan Patrick had 42 for Calumet. Both teams look forward to the Great Lakes Hockey League playoffs beginning Friday in Houghton. Ice King Midgets Win Title
The Calumet Ice Kings sponsored by Aspirus Keweenaw won the Midget BB State Championship over the weekend with a 3-1 victory over the Michigan Travelers. The team finishes the season with a record of 33-2-3.

NHL – Red Wings Edge Blues
Justin Abdelkader’s power play goal just 24 seconds into overtime lifted the Detroit Red Wings to a 2-1 victory over the Saint Louis Blues yesterday. The one-man advantage was left over from a gruesome third period, in which the teams were assessed with 15 penalties. Jimmy Howard made 23 saves to earn the win. The Wings host the Coyotes tomorrow night. Face-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA – Pistons Sink Celtics
The Detroit Pistons also went into overtime yesterday, and came away with a 105-97 victory over the Celtics. Reggie Jackson’s bank shot in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter extended the game, and Detroit scored the first seven points of the extra period to take control. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope led Detroit with 27 points, and Andre Drummond collected 22 rebounds. The Pistons will play at Toronto tomorrow evening.

MLB
Justin Verlander gave up three home runs over 4-1/3rd innings, as half of the Tigers played to a 7-7 tie with the Nationals yesterday. J.D. Martinez and Alex Avila homered for Detroit, and Miguel Cabrera singled in his first game of the spring. The other half of the Tigers lost 5-3 to the Braves yesterday. Kyle Lobstein gave up two runs, and Victor Martinez was hitless in his first spring training appearance. The Tigers have today off, and face the Yankees tomorrow night.

The Brewers blasted five home runs on the way to a 13-4 victory over the White Sox. The Brewers will play the Rockies this afternoon.
