Huskies, Wildcats Tie – Saturday Sports Wrap

Hancock Athletics LogoIn high school hockey Friday night…
– Zach Ahola’s goal with 2.1 seconds left in overtime lifted Hancock to a 3-2 victory over Bay Port. The visiting Pirates, who are ranked third in the state of Wisconsin, took an early 1-0 lead in the first period. Hancock tied it early in the third period, when Ahola returned to the ice from a penalty, and scored from the slot as the trailer. Ted Randell’s unassisted goal put the Bulldogs on top a minute later, but Bay Port scored again to set up the overtime. Hancock outshot Bay Port 41-33.
– Calumet’s comeback from a 3-0 first period deficit fell short, and the Copper Kings lost to Novi 4-3..
– Houghton fell to Brighton 2-1 in overtime.
– Jeffers lost at Kingsford 6-2.

MTU-NMU Hockey Deadlock
The Michigan Tech hockey team scored two goals late in the third period, and salvaged a 3-3 tie at Northern Michigan University Friday night. Tyler Heinonen and Shane Hanna found the net to bring the Huskies back. Tanner Kero scored Tech’s first goal. Those teams play again tonight at MacInnes Arena. Faceoff is at 7:37.

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams entertain Ashland today. The women’s game tips off at noon, and the men’s game at 2:00, at the SDC.

Both NMU teams host Lake Erie this afternoon.

Copley Called Up to Caps
Former Michigan Tech goalie Phoenix Copley has reached the NHL. The Washington Capitals called Copley up from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League. He’ll take over back-up duties for Justin Peters, who was assigned to Hershey for conditioning purposes. Peters hasn’t seen much playing time because Capitals’ goalie Braden Holtby has started 17 straight games. Such conditioning assignments can last up to 14 days. Read more about the move here.

Finlandia Men’s Hockey Falls in Minnesota
The Finlandia University men’s hockey team lost at Gustavus Adolphus 4-2 Friday night. Travis Armstrong and Lane King scored for the Lions, who were outshot 35-12. Finlandia skates at St. Olaf College tonight.

In Great Lakes Hockey League play…
– The Portage Lake Pioneers host the Eagle River Falcons tonight at 7:30 and tomorrow at 1:00 at Dee Stadium.
– The Calumet Wolverines have the weekend off.

NHL – Red Wings Prepare for Capitals
The Detroit Red Wings skate at Washington tonight.

NBA – Pistons Win Streak Ends
The Detroit Pistons’ seven-game winning streak ended Friday night with a 106-103 loss to the Hawks Friday night. Detroit trailed by 19 at halftime, but mounted a furious second-half comeback. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope had a chance to tie the game, but his 3-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark. Caldwell-Pope scored 16 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter. The Pistons host the Nets tonight.

NFL Divisional Playoffs
The NFL Divisional Playoffs will be held this weekend. Today, the Ravens play at New England at 4:35, and the Panthers kick off at Seattle at 8:15. Tomorrow, the Packers host the Cowboys at 1:05, and the Colts play at Denver at 4:40. Hear all four games on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Otter Lake Fishing Tourney Planned
The Otter Lake Sportsmen’s Club is holding its annual Jamie Markle Memorial Ice Fishing Tournament today on Otter Lake. Ice fishing starts at dawn, and ends at 4:00 pm. The weigh-in and after-party will be held at the clubhouse in Tapiola. You can pay the $6.00 entry fee at the OLSC Clubhouse until noon tomorrow.
