Jeffers Boys Cruise to Regional Hoops Crown – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School

The Jeffers boys basketball team shut down Stephenson 79-31 to win a regional title last night. The Jets got 26 points from Ashton Kunishige, 22 from Levi Frahm and 11 from Tavin Larson. Jeffers will face Munising in the state quarterfinals Tuesday at 7:00 at Escanaba. The Mustangs defeated Mackinaw City 60-28 to win their regional crown.

The Baraga girls will take on two-time defending Division Four champion Fowler in the state semifinals today at 5:30 at the Breslin Center in East Lansing. The game is a rematch of last year’s state semifinal, in which the Eagles defeated the Vikings 51-45. Glen Lake and perennial contender Adrian Lenawee Christian will meet in the other Region Four semifinal.

College Hockey

Honors continue to come in for members of the Michigan Tech hockey team. Kyle Kukkonen has been named Rookie of the Year by the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, and Blake Pietila has been tabbed as Goaltender of the Year. Pietila has also been named a top-10 finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, which is given each year to the best player in college hockey. He is the only CCHA player on the list.

Adult Hockey

The Copper Country Old-Timers hockey tournament begins tonight. Play will continue through the weekend, with numerous age divisions for men, and a women’s division, as well. Games will be played at Dee Stadium, the Houghton County Arena, and the Colosseum.

The Red Wings host the Avalanche Saturday. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons host the Nuggets tonight. Coverage begins at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Tigers had yesterday off, and face the Phillies today. Spencer Turnbull will start for Detroit.

The Brewers’ game against the Diamondbacks last night was called off because of rain. 

The Brewers face the Angels this afternoon. Eric Lauer will start for Milwaukee.

NFL

Former Lions and Packers running back Jamaal Williams has reportedly signed a three-year contract with the Saints.

The Packers have re-signed cornerback Keisean Nixon and tight end Tyler Davis.
