Jeffers Boys Fall in State Quarterfinal – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

The Jeffers boys basketball team fell to Munising 52-43 in the Division Four state quarterfinals last night. The Jets conclude their fine season with a record of 25-2. The Mustangs will face Marine City Cardinal Mooney in the semifinals tomorrow at the Breslin Center in East Lansing.

College Hockey

Michigan Tech will host a watch party for the team’s opening-round NCAA tournament game Friday. Doors to the MacInnes Student Ice Arena will open at 4:30. The game against Penn State will begin at 5:00. Fans attending the watch party are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item which will be donated to the Husky FAN. Concessions will be open and the first 100 fans will receive a free Husky Meal which includes a Vollwerth’s hot dog, popcorn, and pop.

College Basketball

Former Michigan Tech basketball standout and assistant coach Dawn Plitzuweit has been named head women’s basketball coach at the University of Minnesota. Plitzuweit was an All-American for the Huskies in the early ’90s. She has since served as head coach at Grand Valley, Northern Kentucky, South Dakota and West Virginia. Plitzuweit is a member of the Michigan Tech Sports Hall of Fame.

NHL

The Red Wings snapped their three-game losing streak with a 3-2 shootout win over the Blues last night. All of the scoring in regulation came in the first period, with Alex Chiasson and Filip Zadina lighting the lamp for Detroit. Lucas Raymond netted the only goal in the shootout. Magnus Hellberg made 20 saves.

The Wings will host the Blues tomorrow night. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons suffered a 129-107 loss to the Hawks last night. Marvin Bagley III scored 31 points for Detroit.

The Pistons have lost 18 of their last 20 games, and visit the Raptors Friday. Coverage begins at 7:05 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Tigers fell to the Yankees 6-3 yesterday. Kerry Carpenter’s two-run homer in the first inning gave Detroit an early lead, but New York put the game away with five runs off Will Vest in the sixth. Spencer Turnbull started, pitched into the fifth inning, and gave up a run on one hit.

The Tigers play the Braves today. Matt Manning will start for Detroit. Coverage will begin at 1:00 on 99.3 The Lift.

Former Tigers pitcher Daniel Norris was released by the Reds yesterday.

The Brewers’ late comeback fell short in a 6-5 loss to the White Sox yesterday. Starter Freddy Peralta gave up three runs over five innings. Milwaukee plated three runs in the bottom of the ninth to make it close.

The Brewers have today off.
