Jeffers Boys Stop E-TC – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School

In girls basketball last night…
• Ontonagon downed Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 56-21.
• L’Anse got past Westwood 54-49.

In boys’ play last evening…
• Jeffers outscored Ewen-Trout Creek 61-49. Johnny Schutz led the Jets with 23 points, and Christian Hocking added 16. Eric Abramson and Jaden Borseth each scored 15 for the Panthers.

On the boys schedule tonight…
• L’Anse welcomes Bessemer.
 • Ontonagon visits Wakefield-Marenisco.
• The Calumet at Hancock game has been canceled.

In girls-boys doubleheaders this evening…
• Baraga plays at Dollar Bay-Tamarack City.
 • Jeffers hosts Republic-Michigamme.
 • Ewen-Trout Creek travels to Watersmeet.

College Softball

The Finlandia softball team opened its season yesterday at the Vikings Classic Dome Tournament in Plymouth, Minnesota. The Lions lost 2-1 to Bethany Lutheran in the first game. Kyndell Coffman gave up just four hits over six innings. Finlandia then fell 4-0 to Gustavus Adolphus.

The Lions will face Concordia Moorhead this morning, and also have a rematch against Gustavus Adolphus.

College Basketball

The Finlandia University basketball team has added another recruit. Jalen Mey is from Milwaukie, Oregon.

College Volleyball

The Michigan Tech volleyball team is ranked 22nd in the nation in this week’s American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II Poll. The Huskies moved one place from last week. Northern Michigan University also entered the poll this week, at number 24.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings host the Dallas Stars tonight. Coverage begins at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

Saddiq Bey scored 28 points, as the Detroit Pistons edged the Toronto Raptors 116-112 last night.

The Pistons visit the Houston Rockets tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 7:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers got just five hits in a 2-0 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies in Grapefruit League play yesterday. Starter Tarik Skubal struck out six and gave up just one hit over three innings. Joe Jiménez gave up both Philly runs in the fourth inning.

The Tigers have today off.

In Cactus League action, the Milwaukee Brewers were off yesterday. They’ll face the Los Angeles Angels this afternoon. Corbin Burnes is scheduled to start.

NFL

The Detroit Lions have agreed to a one-year contract with former Green Bay Packers backup quarterback Tim Boyle. Boyle will compete with David Blough for the chance to back up new starter Jared Goff. There’s also a report that former Green Bay running back running back Jamaal Williams has agreed to a two-year deal with Detroit. The Lions have also completed the trade that brings defensive tackle Michael Brockers in from the Los Angeles Rams. Detroit gives up a future seventh round draft choice to L-A, which clears some badly-needed salary cap space. Former Lions kicker Matt Prater has signed a two-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals.
