Jeffers Nabs District Volleyball Crown – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In the high school volleyball tournament last night, Jeffers defeated Chassell 3-1 to earn the Division Four District 98 title. Wakefield-Marenisco claimed the District 97 crown with a 3-0 victory over Ewen-Trout Creek. The Jets and Cardinals will meet in the regional semifinal Tuesday at 7:30 at Ishpeming.

In the high school football tournament today…
– Lake Linden-Hubbell will play for the Division Eight district title at Ishpeming. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:40 on 97.7 The Wolf and TheWolf.com. The winner will play at Beal City next Saturday. The Aggies upset previously unbeaten Johannesburg-Lewiston 33-20 last night.
– Calumet will host Menominee for the Division Six district crown. Pregame coverage will start at 12:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. The winner will meet Maple City Glen Lake next Saturday. Glen Lake eliminated Harrison 38-30 last evening.

Finlandia

The Finlandia University men’s hockey team dropped a 7-0 decision to Aurora University last night. Those teams play again this afternoon at 4:00 at the Houghton County Arena. The women’s hockey team is off this weekend.

Both Finlandia basketball teams open their seasons today at the University of Dubuque.

The Lions football team hosts Albion College today at McAfee Field. The start time has been moved up to noon.

GLIAC

The Michigan Tech soccer team ended its season with a 2-1 loss at Northern Michigan University yesterday afternoon. The defeat knocked the Huskies out of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference post-season tournament.

The Huskies volleyball team fell 3-2 to Ferris State University last evening. Anna Joynas collected her 1,000th career dig for the Huskies, who host Northwood this afternoon at 3:00.

The Tech football team visits Wayne State University this afternoon.

Both Tech basketball teams begin their seasons today. The women play at Lewis University, and the men at McKendree University.

The Northern Michigan University football squad hosts Saginaw Valley State University this afternoon.

WCHA

The Michigan Tech hockey team lost 3-0 to third-ranked Minnesota State University last night. Robbie Beydoun gave up all three goals over the first 41 minutes. Blake Pietila relieved him, and stopped six shots in his first appearance for the Huskies. Those teams play again tonight at 6:07 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

The NMU hockey team scored three times in the third period to salvage a 3-3 tie with Saint Cloud State University last night. Those teams play again tonight in Marquette.

GLHL

Ian Carroll made 56 saves, but the Calumet Wolverines lost 7-1 to the Mosinee Papermakers last night. Those teams meet again tonight in Mosinee.

The Portage Lake Pioneers edged the Marquette Mutineers 4-3 last night.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings finally put one in the win column last night, defeating the Boston Bruins 4-2. Robby Fabri scored twice in his Detroit debut. Jonathan Bernier made 26 saves, and earned two assists.

The Wings will host the Vegas Golden Knights tomorrow.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons lost to the Indiana Pacers 112-106 last night. Luke Kennard led Detroit with 29 points. The Pistons again played without the injured Blake Griffin, Derrick Rose, Reggie Jackson and Tim Frazier.

Detroit will host the Minnesota Timberwolves Monday.

NFL

Tomorrow, the Detroit Lions visit the Chicago Bears for a 1:00 game. Pregame coverage begins at 11:00 on 99.3 The Lift. 

The Green Bay Packers host the Carolina Panthers in a 4:25 contest.
