Jeffers Stunned at LSC Tourney – Saturday Sports Wrap

In boys high school basketball action Friday night…
– Houghton dropped a 36-34 overtime heartbreaker to Escanaba.
– Hancock lost at Ontonagon 71-63.
– Chassell bested Calumet 58-42.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell remained unbeaten with a 66-54 victory over Jeffers. Arthur Lyons scored 26 for the Lakes. Jaden Wood of the Jets led all scorers with 27.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City outscored Bessemer 72-54.
– Baraga fell to Ewen-Trout Creek 92-55. Jacob Witt scored 36 for the Panthers.
– L’Anse fell to West Iron County 59-52 in overtime. Dylan Harden led the Purple Hornets with 14 points.

In high school hockey last night…
– Houghton fell to Marquette 2-1.

In high school hockey…
– Calumet fell behind early, but came back to claim a 2-2 tie with Escanaba Friday night. Rory Anderson and Robert Erkkila scored for the Copper Kings, and Ian Carroll stopped 26 of 28 shots.
– Hancock entertains Escanaba this afternoon.

In the opening round at the Lake Superior Conference Tournament at the SDC, top-seeded Jeffers was stunned by fourth-seeded Negaunee 7-2. Third-seeded L’Anse lost to second-seeded Kingsford 4-3. The Jets will face the Purple Hornets in the consolation game this afternoon at 1:00. The Flivvers and Miners will play for the championship at 3:00.

MTU Huskies LogoMTU
The Michigan Tech hockey team was shut out 3-0 at Bemidji State Friday night. Jamie Phillips made 22 saves in net for the Huskies, and took the loss. Those teams play again tonight in Bemidji.

Both Tech basketball teams welcome Lake Superior State this afternoon. The women’s game starts at 1:00, and the men’s game at 3:00.

The MTU men’s tennis team lost 6-3 at St. Cloud State Friday night. The Huskies play at St. John’s in Minnesota this afternoon.

NMU Athletics LogoNMU
The Northern Michigan University hockey team blanked Alabama-Huntsville 3-0 Friday night. The Wildcats host the Chargers again tonight.

Both NMU basketball teams host Northwood this afternoon.

Finlandia Lions New LogoFinlandia
Both Finlandia University basketball teams host Northland College today. The women’s game begins at 4:00, and the men’s game starts at 6:00 at the Paavo Nurmi Center. It’s the final game of the season for the men’s team.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team lost 7-1 at St. Scholastica Friday night. Alena Fiala scored the Lions’ only goal. Finlandia plays at St. Scholastica again this afternoon, and wraps up its season with a game at Wisconsin-Superior Sunday morning.

GLHL
The result of the Portage Lake Pioneers’ game against the West Bend Bombers Friday night was not reported. The Pioneers host the Fox Cities Ice Dogs tonight. Face-off is at 7:30 at Dee Stadium.

Calumet Wolverines LogoThe Calumet Wolverines scored eight goals in the second period, and blew out the Ice Dogs 10-2 Friday night. Eric Bausano had four goals and an assist. Jeff Erkkila had four assists. Ryan Patrick made 30 saves. The Wolverines host  the Bombers tonight. Faceoff is at 7:30 at the Colosseum.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings skate at Ottawa tonight. Face-off is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons lost 98-86 at Washington Friday night. Tobias Harris scored 21 points in his Detroit debut. Tip-off is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

NFL
The Green Bay Packers will open next season without defensive lineman Mike Pennel. He’s been suspended for the first four games of the regular season for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse.

MLB
Former Detroit Tiger Tony Phillips has died at age 56. Phillips spent five seasons with Detroit in the early ’90s. He’s best known for his 10 years with Oakland, where he helped the Athletics win the World Series in 1989. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the cause of death was apparently a heart attack.
