Jets, Lakes Boys Close Fine Regular Seasons with Wins – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In boys basketball last night…
• Houghton lost at Iron Mountain 80-35.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell defeated Calumet 53-46. Danny Marcotte scored 13 points in the first quarter for the Lakes, but left the game in the second quarter with an ankle injury. Josh Daavettila also scored 13, and Gabe Popko added 12 points. Blake Tarvis and Gavin Sturos each scored 12 for the Copper Kings. The Lakes outscored the Kings 24-7 at the free throw line. Lake Linden closes its regular season with a record of 19-3.
• Jeffers stopped Ewen-Trout Creek 56-34. For the Jets, Matthew Schutz scored 17, Levi Frahm 16 and
Lincoln Just 13. Caden Besonen and Easton Legault led the Panthers with 11 each, and Austin Gordon chipped in 10. Jeffers finishes its regular season with a record of 21-1, with only a three-point loss to Ishpeming back in December blemishing their mark.
• Chassell got past Wakefield Marenisco 55-49. Brayden Larson and Eli Danison each scored 13 for the Panthers, and Oliver Campbell added 12.

In girls action…
• Baraga raced past Bessemer 76-37.
• Chassell fell to Wakefield-Marenisco 48-41 in overtime.
• Jeffers shut down Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 40-13.

On the final night of the boys regular season…
• Hancock visits West Iron County.
• Baraga hosts Superior Central.
• L’Anse travels to Bessemer.

In girls play tonight…
• The Houghton girls basketball games against Ontonagon have been canceled because of illness within Ontonagon’s team. School officials hope either to reschedule it, or add another game next week. The JV Orange game against Jeffers will still be played as scheduled at 4:15..
• Hancock visits L’Anse.
• Calumet plays at Lake Linden-Hubbell.

The regional hockey tournament begins tomorrow with two semifinals at the SDC…
• Top-seed Houghton meets Calumet at 4:00.
• Second-seed Hancock takes on Jeffers at 6:00.
Doubleheader coverage will begin at 3:40 on KBear 102.3.

The JV hockey tournament also takes place this weekend at the SDC. In tomorrow’s semifinals, Houghton faces Hancock at 10:00, and Calumet takes on Marquette at noon. Coverage will begin at 9:40 on KBear 102.3. We’ll also broadcast Sunday’s consolation and championship games, beginning at 9:00 on KBear.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team torched Wayne State 95-75 last night. The Huskies connected on 73.5 percent of their shots from the field, including 70.8 percent of their three-pointers. Both are new school records, as is the 17 three-pointers they sank. Emma Anderson led Tech with 22 points.

The Tech men’s team lost to the Warriors 75-61. Marcus Tomashek scored 21 for the Huskies.

Both Tech teams visit Saginaw Valley State tomorrow.

Both Northern Michigan squads defeated Saginaw Valley State last evening.

Jacy Weisbrod scored 21, as the women claimed a 63-50 victory.

The men’s 75-70 win was their 20th of the season. Dylan Kuehl scored 21.

Both NMU teams play at Wayne State tomorrow.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team skates at Bowling Green tonight and tomorrow.

The Northern Michigan hockey squad plays at Ferris State tonight and tomorrow.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers host the Mosinee Papermakers tonight. Faceoff is at 7:30 at Dee Stadium.

The Calumet Wolverines welcome the Papermakers tomorrow. The puck drops at 6:00 at the Colosseum.

NHL

The Red Wings came from behind to shade the Avalanche 2-1 in overtime last evening. Dylan Larkin’s goal midway through the third period forced the extra stanza. Patrick Kane scored the game-winner. Alex Lyon made 30 saves.

The Wings entertain the Blues tomorrow. Coverage will start at 11:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons couldn’t overcome a slow start, and fell to the Pacers 129-115 last night. Cade Cunningham scored 30 points.

The Pistons host the Magic tomorrow night. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit’s Isaiah Stewart will be suspended for three games by the NBA for punching Drew Eubanks of the Suns before the teams played on Valentine’s Day. Stewart was taken into custody at the time, but officials say they will not press charges.

MLB

The Tigers have signed free agent infielder Gio Urshela to a one-year contract. Urshela is primarily a third baseman, but can play first, as well. An eight-year veteran, Urshela batted .299 in 62 games last year for the Angels, but missed most of the season because of injuries.
