Jets, Lakes Win Boys District Hoops Titles – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

Houghton will face Sault Ste. Marie in the Division Three hockey tournament quarterfinals today. The Gremlins enter the game with a record of 21-2-2. The Blue Devils’ record is 19-5-1. Face-off is at 1:00 at Lakeview Arena in Marquette. Coverage will begin at 12:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.

Boys basketball district titles were decided last night…
• Division Three, District 65 – Jeffers dispatched Westwood 62-56. The Jets will face Menominee in a regional semifinal Tuesday at Marquette. The Maroons upended Iron Mountain 51-49. The Mountaineers had been ranked second in the state in the Associated Press poll. They close their season with just two losses – both to Menominee, and each by two points.
• Division Four, District 98 – Lake Linden-Hubbell defeated Chassell 56-47. Gabe Popko led the Lakes with 21 points, and Josh Daavettila added 17. Eli Danison paced the Panthers with 21 points, and Oliver Campbell added 10. The Lakes will meet Wakefield-Marenisco in a regional semifinal Tuesday at Houghton High School. The Cardinals defeated Ironwood 41-37 to claim the District 97 crown.
• Division Four, District 99 – Forest Park defeated Norway 59-51. The Trojans will face North Central in a regional semifinal Tuesday at Kingsford. The Jets eliminated Superior Central 69-34.

Lake Linden-Hubbell’s Emily Jokela was named Player of the Year, as the All-Copper Mountain Conference girls basketball honors were released yesterday. Baraga was crowned Team of the Year. Makenna Hendrickson from the Vikings was tabbed as Defensive Player of the Year, and Tyler Larson as Coach of the Year.

Local players joining Jokela and Hendrickson on the Elite Team include Cleo Milkey from Lake Linden-Hubbell, Kara Roberts from Baraga, and Emma Besonen from Ewen-Trout Creek.

Taylor Heinonen from Jeffers filled out the Copper Country Division First Team. Ewen-Trout Creek’s Irelynd McGeshick was among those added to the Porcupine Mountains Division First Team.

The Copper Country Division Second Team includes Mylee Londo from L’Anse, Jaycee Larson from Baraga, Adelyn Swain from Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Sara Johnson from Jeffers, and Mia Coronado from Baraga. Honorable Mention votes went to Kylee Sohlden from Chassell, Brooklyn Dompier from L’Anse, Olivia Shank from Lake Linden-Hubbell, Kinsie Jahfetson from Baraga, and Evelyn Moilanen from Dollar Bay-Tamarack City.

Local players on the Porcupine Mountains Division Second Team include Maddie Pollard from Ontonagon, and eighth-grader Bree Besonen from Ewen-Trout Creek. Ontonagon’s Mady Pantti was among those receiving Honorable Mention votes. See all the honorees here.

The All-WestPAC girls roster was also announced yesterday. Negaunee’s Ella Mason was named Player of the Year. Ishpeming’s Kadie Kaukola was selected as Defensive Player of the Year. Calumet’s Charlie Kemppainen was honored as Coach of the Year.

Members of the Dream Team include Calumet’s Caitlyn Strom, Jenna Maki and Jenessa Eagle from Ishpeming, Danica Shamion from West Iron County, and Megan Marta from Westwood.

Strom and Shamion were also named to the All-Defensive Team, along with Brielle Kero from Hancock, Aubrey Johnson from Negaunee, and Mya Hemmer from Ishpeming.

The Copper Division First Team includes Eva Gerard, Clea Ollanketo and Danica Ryynanen from Houghton, Kiirsi Johnson from Calumet, and Sidney Storti from West Iron County. Lana Aho and Ella Storm from Hancock, and Seanna Stine from West Iron County received Honorable Mention votes.

The Iron Division First Team includes Aubrey Johnson and Callie Rajala from Negaunee, Mya Hemmer from Ishpeming, Lexi Olson from Westwood, and Emily Copley from Iron Mountain. Honorable Mention votes went to Kadie Kaukola from Ishpeming, Izzie Marta from Westwood, Macy Linsenbigler from Iron Mountain, Makayla Delmont, from Gwinn, and Grace Nardi from Negaunee.

College Basketball

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams will close out their regular campaigns at home today against Grand Valley State – the women at noon, and the men at 2:00.

Both Northern Michigan teams will host Davenport University today.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team lost 2-0 to St. Thomas last evening. Blake Pietila took the tough loss in net, stopping 25 of 26 shots. The Tommies’ final tally was an empty-netter. Both teams wrap up their regular seasons tonight at 6:07 at the SDC.

Northern Michigan outskated Bowling Green 4-1 last night. Those teams conclude their regular seasons tonight in Marquette.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers bombed the Marquette Mutineers 13-6 last night.

The Calumet Wolverines fell to the Mosinee Papermakers 10-4 last evening. The Wolverines will host the Mutineers tonight at 6:00.

NHL

The Red Wings will visit the Panthers today. Coverage will begin at 12:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons lost to the Cavaliers 110-100 last night. Cade Cunningham scored 21 points, and had 10 assists.

The Pistons visit the Magic tomorrow night. Coverage will begin at 5:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Tigers downed a split Phillies squad 4-2 yesterday. Parker Meadows and Ryan Kreidler homered. Kenta Maeda gave up a run on two hits over two innings.

The Tigers will face the Pirates this afternoon. Jack Flaherty will start for Detroit.

Detroit Manager A.J. Hinch announced yesterday that Tarik Skubal will be the team’s opening day starter.

The Brewers edged a split Padres squad 4-3. Minor leaguer Brewer Hicklin’s solo homer in the eighth inning provided the winning run.

The Brewers will face the Dodgers this afternoon. Janson Junk will start.
