Kings Dump ‘Dogs; Gremlins Stun Miners – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school football last night…
• Calumet cruised past Hancock 34-18. See video highlights here:

• Houghton edged Negaunee 15-13 in overtime. The Gremlins’ only score in regulation came on a Camden Markham quarterback sneak. On the first play of overtime Nathan Erva broke a tackle at the line of scrimmage, and ran in for a Houghton touchdown. Erva added the two-point conversion. Negaunee responded with a touchdown on its final possession, but quarterback Gerald Johnson’s pass for the two-point conversion was incomplete.
• L’Anse’s game at Iron Mountain, and Ontonagon’s match against North Dickinson were canceled because of continued COVID-19 problems in Dickinson County.

Today, Lake Linden-Hubbell welcomes North Central. The Lakes were originally scheduled to host Newberry, but the change was made earlier this week. Kickoff is set for 2:00.

In volleyball last night, L’Anse swept Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 3-0.

The opening round of the WestPAC volleyball tournament takes place today. Houghton, Hancock, Calumet and West Iron County will compete at Houghton High School. Our coverage begins at 9:40 on KBear 102.3.

Both the Houghton boys and girls reign as WestPAC cross country champions.

At yesterday’s meet in Negaunee, the Gremlin boys finished well ahead of Westwood and Negaunee. Those were the only squads that fielded enough runners to qualify in the team standings. Houghton runners claimed the top six positions, with Eric Weiss first, followed by Branden Peterson, Jake Sullivan, Davin Evans, Cyrus Hamlin and Evan Labyak.

The girls’ competition was closer, but the Gremlins easily outpointed Westwood. Negaunee was third, followed by Calumet, Hancock and West Iron County. Ingrid Seagren and Paige Sleeman finished one-two individually, with Autumn Eles eighth. Hancock’s Sierra Driscoll finished seventh, and Calumet’s Kiira Berg was ninth.
