Kings Edge Pats to Stay Unbeaten – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school football last night…
– Calumet remained unbeaten with a 14-12 victory over Westwood. The Copper Kings took an early lead on a five-yard touchdown run by Travis Ojala. The Patriots responded later in the quarter, and the score was tied at six at halftime. Ojala intercepted a Westwood pass in the third quarter, then caught a 14-yard TD pass from Brent Loukus. The successful two-point conversion gave the Copper Kings a lead that stood up as the Patriots found the end zone in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t convert.
– Hancock suffered its first loss of the season, dropping a 30-28 heartbreaker to Negaunee. Miners’ kicker Erik Salminen booted a 27-yard field goal as time expired to seal the win. Bulldogs’ quarterback Colton Salani passed for three touchdowns, and ran for another.
– Houghton was shut out at Iron Mountain 42-0.
– L’Anse routed the Gogebic Miners 34-6. Jonah Dowd had three long touchdown runs for the Purple Hornets.
– Ontonagon lost to Superior Central 58-34.

Today, Lake Linden-Hubbell entertains Gwinn.

In high school volleyball today…
– Houghton plays at the Rock Invitational at Gladstone.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Chassell, Ontonagon and Baraga compete at the Baraga Invitational.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University volleyball team dropped both of its opening matches at the MIAA preview tournament in Holland yesterday. The Lions lost 3-1 (18-25, 25-16, 25-15, 25-20) to Kalamazoo College in the first match of the day. Kasia Holmstrom had 15 kills, Nicole Anderson had 37 assists and 17 digs. Jessie Diaz had 21 digs to become just the second Lion to record more than 1100 in her career. Finlandia then fell 3-0 (27-25, 25-13, 25-20) to Albion College. Marina Dalton had 11 kills, Anderson had 26 assists and 11 digs, and Diaz had 18 digs. The Lions will face Adrian College and the host Hope College team today.

The Finlandia football team plays at Ripon College this afternoon.

MTU
The Michigan Tech soccer team lost 3-1 at Bemidji State yesterday afternoon. Marisa DeMario’s first-half goal gave the Huskies an early lead, but the Beavers scored three times in the second half to take the game. Tech will visit Winona State tomorrow afternoon.

The Tech volleyball team opened GLIAC play with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 26-24) sweep at Saginaw Valley State last evening. Olivia Ghormley had 19 kills, and Anna Joynas had 18 digs. The Huskies play at Lake Superior State today.

The Tech football team entertains Hillsdale this afternoon. Kickoff is at 1:00 at Sherman Field.

The Northern Michigan University football team hosts UT-Permian Basin this afternoon.

MLB
Jeimer Candelario’s two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Detroit Tigers to a 5-3 victory over the Saint Louis Cardinals last evening. The blast came off a 102-miles-per-hour fastball from Saint Louis reliever Jordan Hicks. Starter Daniel Norris went five innings. He struck out seven, but gave up three runs on four hits.

The Tigers host the Cardinals again tonight. Matthew Boyd will start against Jack Flaherty. Pregame coverage will begin at 5:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Jesús Aquilar’s two-run double in the seventh inning was the difference, as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the San Francisco Giants 4-2 last night. Ryan Braun homered. Chase Anderson gave up both San Francisco runs over five innings. Josh Hader earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief. He struck out five.

The Brewers will entertain the Giants again today. Gio Gonzalez will make his first start for Milwaukee. Chris Stratton will counter for San Francisco.

NFL
The Green Bay Packers host the Chicago Bears tomorrow night. The Detroit Lions entertain the New York Jets Monday night. Hear both games on 99.3 The Lift.
