Kings, Gremlins earn Hockey Shutouts – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school hockey last night…
– Calumet blanked Negaunee 8-0.
– Houghton scored five goals in the third period, as they shut down Kingsford 7-0.

The Hancock High School varsity hockey team is having a can drive to raise money to pay for their upcoming trip to the Trenton Showcase. Bring your returnables to the lobby at the Houghton County Arena Saturday between 10:00 and 1:00, or call 370-3799 to arrange for a pick up.

In boys high school basketball last night…
– Jeffers used a strong fourth quarter to put away a 61-51 victory over Calumet. The Jets outscored the Copper Kings 17-8 down the stretch. Jaden Wood and Caleb Maki each had 17 for Jeffers. Calumet’s Wyatt Loukus led all scorers with 25.
– Chris Filpus’ late three pointer gave Houghton a 43-40 victory over Ontonagon.
– Hancock lost to West Iron County 46-31.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell fell to Ewen-Trout Creek 72-50. Jake Witt had 27 points and 18 rebounds for the Panthers.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City got past Chassell 66-56. Jaden Janke scored 20 for the Blue Bolts. Zach Goddard had 17 for the Panthers.

North Central cruised to a 76-24 win over Mid-Peninsula last night. The Jets’ 65th consecutive victory ties the all-time state record set by Chassell in the 1950s. North Central will host Bark River-Harris Friday at 6:30. The game will be broadcast live on the MHSAA website.

In girls action last night, L’Anse defeated Wakefield-Marenisco 82-60. Bailey Froberg scored 36 for the Purple Hornets.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University women’s hockey team lost 4-2 to Northland College last night. The Lumberjills broke open a 1-1 tie with two goals in the first two minutes of the third period. Alena Fiala and Bella Abear scored for the Lions.  Breanna Merriam stopped 46 shots in goal.

Coreau

NHL
David Pastrnak’s goal in the final minute of overtime gave the Boston Bruins a 4-3 victory over the Detroit Red Wings last night. Andreas Athanasiou, Mike Green and Tomas Tatar scored for Detroit. Jared Coreau made 45 saves. The Wings return home to host the Maple Leafs tonight. Faceoff is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Detroit Pistons entertain the New Orleans Pelicans tonight.

Former Detroit Tigers’ catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia has signed a one-year deal with the Toronto Blue Jays.
