Kings, Hornets Advance in V’Ball – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School Volleyball Tourney
– In the high school volleyball tournament, the Class D District semifinals will be played tonight at Lake Linden-Hubbell. Ontonagon will face Dollar Bay at 6:00, and the Lakes will take on Baraga at 7:30.
– In Class C tournament play at Calumet last night. L’Anse edged Ironwood 3-2 (taking the fifth set 15-10). Calumet shut out Hancock 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-15). The Purple Hornets and Copper Kings will play for the district crown tomorrow night at 7:00 at Calumet.
– In Class B, Houghton will open play tonight against Gladstone, at Gladstone, at 7:00. Escanaba will host Kingsford.

The Calumet High School Athletics Department is chartering a fan bus to the Copper Kings’ District Final football game Saturday at Menominee. If you’d like to ride, it’ll cost you $25.00. Call 337-0311 extension 2204 to reserve a seat by noon tomorrow.

MTU Soccer Team Advances
The Michigan Tech soccer team raced past Walsh 5-0 in the opening round of the GLIAC tournament yesterday. The five goals tied the school record for most goals in a game. Janelle Riedl led the Huskies with a goal and two assists. Walsh managed only seven shots on goal. The Huskies travel to Ohio Dominican to face Grand Valley State Friday afternoon at 4:00. The Lakers eliminated Ferris State 4-0 last night.

NHL – Red Wings Fall at Ottawa
The Detroit Red Wings gave up two late goals, and lost to the Ottawa Senators 3-1 last night. The Wings face the Rangers in New York tonight. Faceoff is at 8:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA – Pistons Fall to Nets
The Detroit Pistons return to action at home tonight against the Knicks.

Ski Tigers Swap/Registration Saturday
Copper Country Ski Tigers LogoThe Copper Country Ski Tigers will hold their annual ski swap and registration Saturday in a new location. The Ski Tigers provide Nordic ski instruction for kids between ages five and 17. The swap, and registration for the winter season, will take place at the Nara Chalet between 2:00 and 4:00. The ski swap is open to everyone. If you have items to sell, drop them off at the Chalet between 12:45 and 1:45. Pick up checks or unsold equipment at 4:00. A 15 percent commission (no more than $50.00) will be charged to raise money for the Ski Tigers race team. Find out more about the Ski Tigers here.
