Kings, Jets and Panthers Advance – Tuesday Sports Wrap

The boys’ tournament began last night…
– In Class B, Houghton’s season ended with a 55-43 loss to Kingsford.
– In Class C, Calumet eliminated Hancock 50-32. L’Anse fell to Ironwood 58-48. The Copper Kings and Red Devils will meet for the District title tomorrow night at Ironwood.
Jeffers Jets LogoChassell Panthers Logo– In Class D at Ontonagon, Jeffers got off to a quick start, and cruised past Baraga 44-34. Brendan Varline of the Vikings led all scorers with 20 points. Brant Ryynanen scored 12 for the Jets. In the second game, Chassell fell behind by 10 points in the first quarter, then roared back to bury Ontonagon 56-36. The Panthers closed the gap to two points at halftime, and then outscored the Gladiators 25-6 in the third quarter to put the game away. Abe Gockenbach led all scorers with 16 points for Chassell, and Lars Daavettila added 13. Tyler Beaudry scored 13 for Ontonagon. Jeffers will face Dollar Bay tomorrow night at 6:00, and Chassell will take on Lake Linden-Hubbell at 7:30. Our pregame coverage begins around 5:40 on 97.7 The Wolf.

In the girls’ high school basketball tournament…
– In Class B, Houghton faces Kalkaska in the Regional semifinal tonight at 7:00 at Sault Ste. Marie. Hear the broadcast on KBear 102 and KBear102.com.
– In Class C, Calumet meets Iron Mountain in Escanaba.
– In Class D, Ontonagon takes on Forest Park in the Regional semifinal tonight at 6:00 at Kingsford.

Finlandia
The Finlandia softball team wrapped up its Florida trip yesterday with a 4-3 loss to Juniata College, and an 11-2 loss to Thiel College.

Finlandia University has added nine new volleyball recruits to its roster. The incoming players include Abbey Younggren from L’Anse, and Amanda Manninen, Taylor Nettell, and Shannon and Nicole Anderson from Hancock. Read about the new Lions here.

MTU Hockey Player Honored
Tyler Heinonen of the Michigan Tech hockey team has been named the WCHA Offensive Player of the Week. Heinonen scored three goals in the Huskies’ sweep of Northern Michigan University.

NHL – Red Wings Defeat Oilers
The Detroit Red Wings skated past Edmonton 5-2 last night. Teemu Pulkkinen, Riley Sheahan and Pavel Datsyuk each had a goal and an assist. Jimmy Howard made 36 saves. The Wings host the Blue Jackets Thursday evening. Face-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA – Pistons Visit LA
The Detroit Pistons face the Lakers in Los Angeles tonight. Tip-off is at 10:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

MLB
Anibal Sanchez allowed two runs in his second start of the spring, but the Detroit Tigers came back to edge the Blue Jays 6-4 yesterday. The Tigers play the Phillies this afternoon..

Jimmy Nelson threw two scoreless innings in his first spring start, but the Brewers lost to the Royals 5-4. The Brewers face the Reds this afternoon.

NFL
The Packers have signed backup quarterback Scott Tolzien to a one-year deal. Tolzien lost the backup job to Matt Flynn last season, but Flynn is a free agent.
